    Really stupid question about UDFAs

Not sure this has been asked before, and if so I apologize.

So, with the lockout, the rule is, once drafted teams can have no contact with players drafted.

No negotiations, no contracts, no signings, no playbooks, no meetings, no nothing.

What happens to those lonely souls who don't get drafted?

The guys that, RIGHT after the draft ends, typically get calls from all 32 teams saying "we want to sign you tonite!"

How do UDFA's get treated during the lockout?

    Can they be signed?

So long as Terrence Malick signs off on it, yes.

No they are in total limbo and teams will be in big trouble if they try and talk to these guys after the draft they said on nfl network. They said that for that reason a lot of teams are treating this like college recruiting now trying to get on the good side of guys they feel may by udfa's so that as soon as things ger lifted they can try and make their signings.

    What a cluster-f*ck.

So if the lock-out gets settled in August, there will be a free-for-all to sign as many of these guys as possible.

And they have to work out on their own and stay in football shape.

And FO's have to have spys to figure out who's gotten fat, injured, drugged up etc in the interim.

    Seriously, WLF.

Yup....the biggest losers in this whole CBA mess are the guys who go undrafted and who can't be signed until a new agreement is reached. They are in total limbo for as long as it takes for a new CBA to be reached, which could be many months.

What do they do? Borrow money and keep working out in the hope that someone maybe signs them eventually? Try to land a job in another league? Give up football and get a regular job?

Not to mention that their chances of actually making a team - with a greatly shortened offseason to impress coaches - are massively reduced by the CBA fallout.

NFL superstars will be OK. Normal NFL players will be OK. Drafted guys will be OK. UDFAs are going to be truly stiffed and are stuck between a rock and a hard place. For these guys, the longshots, the current situation truly sucks.

However, I can see a lot of teams around the 6-7th round talking to guys they think might get left behind. They can start setting up and telling players their plans for when a CBA is reached. Unfortunately, that is still no guarantee for the UDFA.

Well, I wasn't sure if it was a stupid question or not, so I wanted to throw out a mea culpa in advance it it was.

Man, those guys are taking it up the azz in this mess.

Usually it's a relatively enviable position to be one of the top UDFA rather than a 7th rounder--getting to pick and choose the best situation for you.

    Ooof.
