How much longer can this country afford to spend like a shipload of drunken sailors and not hit rock bottom?

What are you talking about? We just have to keep going back to the ATM (a.k.a. "rich people") . . .

CHART: U.S. Military Spending Vs. The World
The increase in 2010 is almost entirely down to the United States, which accounted for $19.6 billion of the $20.6 billion real-terms increase. Excluding the U.S., the total in the ‘rest of the world’ barely changed in 2010, increasing by a statistically insignificant 0.1 per cent.

Greg Scoblete summarizes the rest of the world:

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has a new report out highlighting global military expenditures. As the above chart indicates, the U.S. retains a healthy lead.

Regionally, defense spending in Europe has fallen 2.8 percent while spending in South America has risen by 5.8 percent and in Africa by 5.2 percent. Brazil drove a lot of the South American growth. Asia rose only a modest 1.4 percent, which the Institute said was slower than previous years. Overall, global military expenditures ticked up slightly at 1.3 percent, the slowest growth rate since 2001.
Who's arguing?

We need to cut spending in ALL areas -- military, foreign aid, AND entitlements.

It's amazing anyone acts like it's one or the other . . .

6. #6
Even if we cut our military spending in half, it would be 3X what China spends

And how much do they spend on education (since they produce such a "better product")?

8. #8
How about cutting the Dept. of Energy, Dept of Education, Outsourcing the TSA and about 1/3 of the entitlements. BTW everyone pays taxes. Not just 50% of the working people. Prices of Gas and Food are going up and he fiddles while we burn! What a useless piece of crap!

Can you do another chart, showing U.S. Involvement in ongoing Millitary Action as a percentage of the Worlds Nations? Also one for U.S. Millitary Presense in other Nations vs. the rest of the world? Thanks.

I, for one, would prefer a Millitary Policy of reduction. Reduce our Foreign Wars (IRaq, Afghanistan, Libya). Reduce our Foreign Presense (S.Korea, Germany, etc). Reduce Expenditures by increasing efficientcy and technology. A sleeker, modern, ultra-high-tech millitary, for defenseive use, not aggresive. End all funding to the U.N., and withdraw U.S. millitary support for U.N. operations. Bring the boys back home, and keep um' here. Chalk up Afghanistan as a loss (because it is, no matter how long we stay), Iraq as a Win (because it is, if THEY **** it up now, thats their problem) and Libya as the "Wtf, huh?" that is is.

agree

send a message to the world. No more nation building. If a country sponsors a terror attack on the U.S.That nation will held responsible and we will do "severe" damage to that country.

All these billions spend for these weapons and we keep bogging down our troops to rebuild these s-holes

Part of the reason China spends so little on defense is they 1) Pay their military peanuts. 2) They don't have union workers making their weapons.

That said we have two parties in this country who are both way off base. The Democrats want to make minor cuts to the budget and tax the rich. The Republicans want to actually lower taxes and cut lots of programs including Medicare. They'll never agree.
I am conservative but we need to go back to the tax rates which existed in 2000 FOR EVERYBODY! Give a break for inheritance tax (2-3 mill), work out a dividend, capital gains compromise and run with it.
Reduce military spending by 2-3%. Reduce the rest of government spending (ex SS, Medicare, Medicaid) by 4-5%. THat's head count reduction and salary freeze.
Make SS retirement at 70. Same for Medicare. Eliminate early retirement at 62. I heard the arguement about a laborer. Sorry, you lose. Should have moved up the ladder to management. Medicaid - loaded with fraud. Cut it by 10%.
Eliminate totally Education Dept and HUD. And perhaps one or two others.
Never happen though. It would happen in any one of our households. Be responsible.
Like if my kid wanted to go to Harvard. Not for $55 a year+. Have fun at Penn State.

the original poster wonders when "rock bottom" is going to arrive

im guessing 200 years from now. Or maybe the whole world speaking English and it never arrives.

Spending on education is a better way to spend than to spend on bombs and other weapons that destroy people and places.

We do need to get rid of a lot of agencies. Some of these agencies just keep revolving. The DOI used to deliver freedom papers to freed slaves. Now they take care (allegedly) of the national parks.

A lot of these agencies are not in the constitution (DHS). The DOE has yet to deliver a good energy policy. They are just a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Both parties need to be held accountable for all of this spending.

As for defense spending, it is in the constitution, but it has been made into an abomination these days.
