Thread: Waterboarding WORKS

  1. #21
this is untrue. There's not a part of the GC that says torture is allowed for countries that don't sign.

the geneva convention doesn't extend an agreement only between countries.

it is a pact signed by individual countries to act a certain way in all warfare situations. the moral obligation is we signed this treaty, we should honor it.

the right seems to talk an awful lot about morals and doing the right thing... well honoring the geneva convention is the right thing. any way we look at it.
It's not a moral obligation it's a legal obligation. These are not POW's they are enemy combatants who aren't in uniform and have routinely taken and murdered POW's.
I was listening to a radio interview with veterans of WWII... one of the men was in a German POW camp. and they asked him how did they treat you?

and the veteran replied "like an officer and a gentleman. there was the geneva convention.".
How were the men in Japanese POW camps treated?

Exactly. And what happened to the Japanese military officers and soldiers who waterboarded American POW's?

    Oh.

We executed them? :dunno: That's weird.

Not very well at all. On the other hand the Japenese Navy picked up survivors of ships that were sunk of course they turned them over to the Army who brutalized them. The US Navy position was to allow everyone on ships that were sunk to drown.

funny, if you told me, "when we cut off the little toe all intelligence we get from the suspect is accurate and actionable." I would be a supporter of cutting off toes.

When you tell me, "well, once in a while Waterboarding may or may not give us intelligence we may or may not be ale to use and we have to do it over 100 times" I think...hmmm..sounds like a ****ty way to try and get information.

It seems among credible sources, most of them seem to think torture (that is intense interrogation techniques to anyone who has a problem saying torture) doesn't have a good return value on intelligence.

If your willing to torture people for results why would you be against it for the sheer fun of it?

I am not, but we aren't doing that or saying that are we? We are saying how effective it is.

If you asked me should we torture guys responsible for terror attacks..you betcha...that is why I am not in charge though.

I have no moral issue with hurting bad guys. I have an issue with wasting money, time, political standing, and resources on techniques that aren't proven to get reliable intelligence.

I also don't support torturing innocent people (not that anyone water-boarded was innocent. But if the possibility exists, then we shouldn't do it.)

That is my stance on the death penalty too, I have no problem killing bad guys, but since our legal system is not infallible, we shouldn't use it.

There are many people who aren't bad guys who know things they don't even know they know.

187 times before we got a scrap of information.

    I don't think it's worth the price.
