Tell Me About (TMA): "Trip-Hop"

    So....

I've always loved the song "Angel" by Massive Attack. Very VERY Pink Floydian in my not too humble view. Very much cpatures that atmospheric, brooding style and sound, and some of the Epic too (minus the guitar solo stuff, obviously).

I've heard Massive Attack called "Trip Hop" before, and since it has "hop", a la "Hip Hop", which I'm not a fan of, I've always stayed away.

But a few months back I downloaded the full MA Album "Mezzanine" from iTunes, and I find I quite like it. Alot of it really does have a Floydian vibe to me, albeit through the filter of a more Africanized sound, with some heavy Techno overtones.

So, I was hoping we might have some knowledgeable music fans about, who know all there is to know about Trip Hop, and cound perhaps point me in the general direction of some other Floydian-esque of at least slightly Floyd inspired acts along the lines of Massive Attack.

I find, for example, the Gorillas have a bit of it in them as well, but I already own all their albums.:D

I don't know much about trip hop, but here's a link where I found some cool Floyd like songs I never heard of. It is a few years old, but hopefully you maybe find something new to add to your summer chill out play list.

Dunno much about pink floyd but I like trip hop. Also don't know why this list left out Tricky, he was part of MA before going solo.

My favorite track by Tricky, Christiansands off of Pre-Millenium Tension

Definitely has more "hop" to the trip-hop on this one, but I love the lyrics. I was going through a bad breakup when this came out and this album was the soundtrack to that era in my life.

Portishead is another group that falls into this category as well. I would think there is a bit of overlap with shoegaze and sadcore stuff as well.

Massive Attack's "Paradise Circus" was used as the theme song for the awesome BBC mini-series "Luther":

Love Deftones but Chino's Team Sleep project is way more in line with the "Trip Hop". It is really chill downtempo stuff. Deftones, other than a handful of songs is more on the heavy side.

I love Massive Attack as well but discovered them by accident when I went beserk on LimeWire before it all turned into viruses and malware. I downloaded a ton of Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, Garbage, Lords Of Acid (note:bizarre) Paul Oakenfold, Junkie XL, Propellerheads....and I found I quite liked most of it. Admittedly some stuff is definitely not up my alley, but some stuff does grow on you.

You don't have to go to raves and take X in order to like some of the music (but I'm sure it helps).

trip hop is another name for "downtempo" or "chill out" it's basically ambient hip hop type beats without the rap verses. (reminds me of a Mr Show skit: rap the musical, all the fun of rap without all that rap! )

trip hop can also be found under "ethereal" or "acid jazz" genre titles

massive attack has singing verses and more experimental interludes (floydian), so they aren't like most other trip hop. they are a trip hop/rock blend... they are best known in the USA for teardrop the theme song to "house MD"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7K72X4eo_s

one of the major bands/labels for trip hop is "nightmares on wax" listen to almost anything they make it's trip hop 100%

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8MLqYNGKdI

also there are these compilations called "mushroom jazz" by mark farina... alot of good trip hop on these cd's . I recommend vol 2 but they are all good.

Knew I could count on you Bit.

Indeed, I am seeking the more Electronic/Chill Beats/Keyboard Droning Floydian variety of techno/trip-hob/ambient, but I do like vocals (if a decent voice), and alot of techno/ambient doesn't have them (or just use samples repeated).

Since Floyd is pretty much retired for new material, Radiohead is the only real active Floydian band, and they incorperate alot of electronica themselves, probably why I cam to like it more.

So more Massive Attack/Radiohead/Floydalikes are what I seek, but like Floyd themselves, not exactly alot of followers out there. A million wanna-be Nirvana's, REM's, U2's and Alice In Chains's, but no wanna-be Floyds makes Fish a sad panda.

I liked the recommendation of Tricky and Team Sleep earlier in the thread.

none of these are on Radiohead's level (certainly not Floyd) but... none the less
