Haynesworth and Ochocinco status
An NFL executive "familiar with the Patriots ways" has told the National Football Post he expects New England to cut "one or both" of Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco before the regular season begins.
The source believes Patriots HC Bill Belichick will "use the controversial players to help control and send a message to his locker room." Haynesworth has just a $1.5 million base salary this season, while Ochocinco is making $1 million. Haynesworth is the more likely of the two to be cut, but the odds don't seem particularly high either is cut loose before Week 1.

so what does the lacky media do:

Does the national sports media take back all the edicts that the these moves were brillant and have made the patriots a stronger team and, at the same time, how brillant Belichick was for bringing them in?

No, now he was brilliant just for bringing them in and, in fact, the true genius will be to cut them before the season starts.

These are the same people who marvel at Belichick for collecting a hundred draft picks each year and then trading them for future picks instead of picking players. Now its okay to waste picks on players that were cut because it sends.....a message.

Am I misreading this? It's basically saying something may happen, or it might not.

Either way Belichick is a genius.

Thank you Greg! RT @Greg_A_Bedard Well, @danpompei wrote it...and was just relaying what an exec thinks, not that it will happen

The big departures under Belichick have all been about return on investment. Nothing else.

@SteveB7SFG Belichick cares about whether you are performing, and if it matches your salary. If not, you're gone.

Haynesworth may be cut before the season (never thought he was guaranteed for a roster spot), but reading Pompei's article this is pure speculation and not very good speculation. If the source is familiar with the Patriots ways, he would know the Pats have never cut a big name player "to send a message to the lockerroom". These are the same speculations that came out about Randy Moss in the weeks before the start of the season in 2007.

OchoCinco isn't getting cut since they gave him a $4.5 bonus. It is also doubtful that Haynesworth gets cut because they are only on the hook for $1.5 million if he totally busts out after he redid his deal.

And yes, it doesn't mean either of the guys will work out even if they make the roster.

BTW, didn't cutting Ty Warren already send the message to the Pats' locker room that this source says that cutting OchoCinco and/or Haynesworth would send. Although Belichick didn't cut Warren to send a message either.

IJF, when it comes to Belichick, ours is not to reason why. Just accept that as football fans we are blessed to be touched by genius. And be very grateful that we have the media to remind us of this---every hour on the hour. :P

    This article is comical.

An NFL executive "familiar with the Patriots ways" Sounds like a serious insider, so Tampa Bay's V.P. of Marketing, who was originally from New Hampshire would qualify right.

So Haynesworth isn't being cut because he's hurt or out of shape and Ocho isn't being cut because he looked bad in camp or tweeting too much. The article says he needs to "send a message to his locker room"

So his premise is the Pats had some bad apples from last year's team still on the roster and instead of cutting/disciplining them he trades for two outside players cuts them to get the other players in line. LOL

It really is a brilliant strategy by Belichick.

He signs Haynesworth and Ocho and all the media says he's a genius because the "Patriot's Way" will force these guys in line and Belichick will get the absolute best out of them.

Belichick can't get the best out of them because they're inherently turds, so he cuts them and all the media says he's a genius for cutting them so early.

It's a win-win for Belichick, unlike the playoffs over the last 4 yrs for him.

I'm guessing they'll put up with his BS in the pre season and see what Haynesworth provides effort wise the the first couple of regular season games, he'll be on a short leash and BB will cut him if he stays true to his malcontent form.

I'd be shocked in Ocho was cut only because of the money paid and the borderline nauseating mutual admiration he and BB have for one another.;)
