    But the interesting paragraph is below:

    For competitive reasons, Tannenbaum didn't want to disclose his spending plans, but the GM appears to have an eye on the future. Unused cap room can be pushed into future years and, according to a source, the Jets are planning to use that mechanism to help them re-sign players in 2012 and beyond.


    So it seems that any unused cap can be pushed forward into future years

    That has always been the case, you give a player a not likely to be earned incentive, say Sanchez leading the team in tackles, he does not reach the goal, and the money is saved for the following year. Teams have up to the 6th week in the season in years past, but this year for some reason the 3rd week of Sept seems to hold a lot of meaning.
