    Why do hurricanes "pack" winds?

Why is it that the weather channel people always talk about Hurricanes that are "packing" winds of up to 80mph, 90mph or whatever?

In England the storms don't "pack" any winds.

    Just sayin'

Because, in England, the storms are too busy having tea and crumpets and playing cricket and hanging out with people named Chadwick and James and Sir Loin of Beef.

Because using the word "featuring" is demeaning to science-casters.

    Can't go there.

I think it harkens back to the days when hurricanes were only named for women. If you've ever traveled with a woman you know they pack everything.

Because everyone on the set giggles when they say the wind 'blows' :dunno:

    Et tu, jw? :D

Forecasters want to sound cool. Can't be like thugs and say they're "packing heat" so they say the hurricanes "pack wind."

Or maybe not. Maybe they don't have a big vocabulary and once they latch onto a word, they use it over and over again. Possibly. :P

Somewhat related, why do they say tornadoes leave a "path of destruction"?

Something like "swath" seems more apropos.

You know why the gheys are the first to check out of a hotel in the morning?

Because they pack their sh*t the night before.

    Very nuanced there.

    You sound almost British.

Thanks. Affectations such as that harken back to, IMHO, a much more refined and dignified point in history.

    Or sumthin'.
