    12/20/2011 4:38 PM

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that DL Rashaad Duncan has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

The 25-year-old Duncan (6’3”, 330) had been assigned to the Sharks prior to the 2011 season, but was then signed by the National Football League’s Washington Redskins before playing a game in Jacksonville. Duncan was waived by the Redskins on July 30.

Duncan began his NFL career in 2009, signing as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent time with the practice squads of the Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills in 2009, then spent the entirety of the 2010 season with Buffalo.

Duncan played his collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he appeared in 48 consecutive games during his four seasons at the school. As a junior in 2007, Duncan started 11 of the team’s 12 games at nose tackle and recorded 40 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two sacks. He concluded his career at Pittsburgh with a career-high 55 tackles during his senior year.

A Florida native, Duncan attended Glades Central High School in Belle Glade.

    SHARKS ADD FULLBACK RENDRICK TAYLOR

    01/05/2012 4:35 PM

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Thursday that fullback Rendrick Taylor has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

The 24-year-old Taylor (6’2”, 270) finished the 2010 season as part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad. He had been with the team in training camp, was waived on September 4 and returned to Tampa in December. The Buccaneers then waived Taylor on August 29, 2011. Taylor also played for the United Football League’s Omaha Nighthawks in that league’s inaugural 2010 season.

Before beginning his professional career, Taylor played at Clemson University. Taylor played wide receiver for his first three years at Clemson, totaling 46 receptions for 480 yards and one touchdown from 2005 to 2007. After redshirting the 2008 season due to injury, Taylor moved to fullback in 2009 and carried the ball 13 times for 37 yards and caught eight passes for 43 yards. As a blocker, Taylor helped Clemson average 170.4 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry during that season.

Taylor is a native of Clio, SC and played at Marlboro County High School.

PLAYOFF HERO HARVEY TO RETURN TO SHARKS

    01/23/2012 12:58 PM

JACKSONVILLE - The man who made the final catch of the 2011 Arena Football League season will return to the defending champions, as the ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Monday that wide receiver Jeron Harvey has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

When he last took the field, the 27-year-old Harvey (6’4”, 225) ended ArenaBowl XXIV by hauling in the game-winning reception as time expired in Jacksonville’s 73-70 victory over the Arizona Rattlers on August 12, 2011. The play capped a postseason in which Harvey totaled 16 receptions for 175 yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns.

“Obviously, this is a huge signing for the 2012 season,” Sharks Head Coach Les Moss said. “Jeron is one of the top receivers in this league. Everyone knows about the ArenaBowl winning catch but the way he played in that fourth quarter and throughout the playoffs, he is a difference maker. I’m excited and I know our quarterbacks are too.”

Harvey’s postseason performance came after the receiver missed the final six games of the 2011 regular season due to injury. Despite playing in just 11 of the Sharks’ 18 regular-season contests, Harvey hauled in 90 passes for 1077 yards and 31 touchdowns, ranking second, third, and second on the team in those respective categories. Harvey also ran for 18 yards and two touchdowns on three carries during the regular season.

“We’re very excited to have Jeron back for his third year with us,” Sharks Managing Partner Jeff Bouchy said. “It will be great to have an AFL veteran to help anchor what will be a young receiving corps in 2012.”

During the Sharks’ inaugural 2010 season, Harvey appeared in seven games and caught 27 passes for 364 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown and contributed nine tackles.

Before beginning his AFL career, Harvey spent time with the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts in 2009. Prior to that, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008.

Harvey finished his college career at the University of Houston, where he recorded 55 receptions for 673 yards and three touchdowns as a senior in 2007. The Jacksonville native attended Andrew Jackson High School.

JACKSONVILLE – The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that defensive back Daylan Walker has been assigned to the team’s 2012 roster.

The 26-year-old Walker (5’9”, 187) most recently had two stints with the B.C. Lions of the Canadian Football League. Signed by the Lions during the 2010 season, he was re-signed by the club in December of that year before being released prior to the 2011 season. AFL Moves to Six-Man Officiating Crews

AFL Moves to Six-Man Officiating Crews

    AFL Communications
    01/30/2012 4:25 PM
CHICAGO – The Arena Football League will move to a six-man officiating crew during the 2012 season, AFL Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz announced today. The addition also brings a change to challenge and replay rules in all AFL-markets.

Since the League’s inception in 1987, a five-man officiating team was in place; however, League officials began talks of adding a member to the officiating crew to maintain the accuracy and credibility of the game.

“The discussion started during Week 18 of the 2011 season,” AFL Director of Football Operations Joe Kleinsmith said. “During the 2011 postseason, we added a sixth-man to the officiating crew.”

The six-man mechanic worked and the League opted to use six-man officiating crews during every game of the 2012 AFL season.

“One of our main concerns was interference by both players and fans,” Kleinsmith said. “Instead of just one back judge, we added a second.”

The League will utilize one referee, an umpire, line judge, side judge and two back judges.

“I think that’s a commitment from the AFL to the importance of officiating, fair play and player safety,” AFL Assistant Coordinator of Officials Dave Chesney said.

The AFL will still utilize regional officiating crews, who are rotated and also strategically placed in other areas.

The League has also changed replay and challenge rules for the AFL’s 25th season in 2012.

Coaches’ challenges and replays will be available in every AFL market for all regular season and post season games. Teams will be awarded two challenges per contest. If they win both, a third challenge will be available. Furthermore, challenges will only be available if the team has a timeout remaining.

Jacksonville Sharks Announce Free Preseason Game

SHARKS TO KICK OFF 2012 WITH FREE PRESEASON SCRIMMAGE

    02/03/2012 9:27 AM

JACKSONVILLE - The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Friday that the team will hold a free preseason benefit scrimmage for the second consecutive year. This year, the Sharks will take on the New Orleans VooDoo at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3rd on Sea Best Field at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

The event will also serve as the first opportunity for season ticket holders to pick up their tickets for the upcoming season. Season ticket holders will be able to pick up their tickets, lanyards (Shark Pit and Arena Club only), VIP passes and other commemorative items beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Duval Room within the arena. Additionally, season ticket holders may participate in a question and answer session with members of Sharks management at 10:30 a.m. in the Duval Room.

The Sharks have partnered with Second Harvest North Florida, joining forces in the preseason contest for the second straight year. The two organizations will use this event to generate resources needed to feed the food-insecure households throughout the First Coast. Additionally, Florida Transfer & Storage will help collect and transport donated items to the Second Harvest warehouse and distribution center.

“We are very pleased to offer another free preseason event for our fans this year,” Sharks Managing Partner Jeff Bouchy said. “After the support we received over the past two years, it’s great to be able to give back to the community with an event of this magnitude. It is inexcusable that any family in the country, let alone North Florida, goes hungry at any point. This is a chance for Shark Nation to come together to help those in need. Our goal is to collect at least 15,000 pounds of food at this event. I know our fans will rise to the occasion.”

As media partners for the preseason contest, First Coast News and Clear Channel Radio will aid the Sharks in working toward this goal.

Admission to the scrimmage will be free of charge, though fans are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable canned food that will be collected outside the arena on behalf of Second Harvest.

During last year’s preseason event, the Sharks and Second Harvest collected a total of 8,140 pounds of canned food. An increase to 15,000 pounds donated would theoretically provide enough food to feed one meal to a capacity crowd at Sea Best Field.

“The Sharks are amazing partners in helping to bring excitement into the Jacksonville community,” Second Harvest Executive Director Bruce Ganger said. “Just like they are champions, we appreciate their commitment to champion the cause of ending hunger in North Florida. The impact of the food collected at this event will enable us to feed thousands of people.”

In 2011, Second Harvest distributed more than 20 million pounds of food throughout the 17 counties the organization serves. While that figure has increased annually, Second Harvest continually works toward its goal of 40 million pounds distributed by 2015.

Held three weeks before the Sharks’ home opener, the game will give fans a chance to get an early glimpse at both the defending champion Sharks and one of the team’s South Division rivals. The gates will open at 11:30 a.m. for the general public. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, though season ticket holders who wish to sit in their usual seats may enter the arena beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The 12:30 kickoff is due to Monster Jam, scheduled for later that evening in downtown Jacksonville.

    02/08/2012 5:33 PM

JACKSONVILLE - The ArenaBowl XXIV Champion Jacksonville Sharks announced Wednesday that wide receiver John Chiles has been activated from the Arena Football League's "Other League Exempt" list.

The 23-year-old Chiles (6'2", 215) was placed on the exempt list after signing with the National Football League's St. Louis Rams in late November. Chiles finished the season on the team's practice squad before being released on Monday. The former Texas Longhorn was orginially assigned to the Sharks' 2012 roster on October 5.

The upcoming season will be Chiles’ first in the Arena Football League. At Texas, he totaled 65 receptions for 752 yards and four touchdowns in his four-year collegiate career. Chiles spent time at both quarterback and running back during his first two years with the Longhorns, producing two passing touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns.
