Man wanted to use dead bear in murder plot

FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Franklin County man has been sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for trying twice to kill his ex-girlfriend, including a plan to make it look like she was mauled by a bear.
Prosecutors say 57-year-old Clyde Gardner's first plan was to kill a bear, skin it and wear the pelt while using the claws to kill her when she took out the trash.
After giving up on that idea, Gardner, an experienced demolition derby driver, asked a man to stage a car accident and gave him advice on how to do it. That man alerted police.
Gardner pleaded guilty in July to second degree conspiracy.
