    D dept. : Cromartie ...... ~ ~ ~

    AFC Whispers
Cromartie's play picking up of late for Jets

Our sources around the AFC are hearing the following whispers:

    • Jets CB Antonio Cromartie has played well since a game to forget in Oakland in Week Three, when he committed four penalties. Sometimes the forgotten corner playing opposite Darrelle Revis, Cromartie has avoided the hiccups and has only three penalties in the last seven games. The tandem of Cromartie and Revis continues to pay dividends. Opposing quarterbacks are completing only 54.4 percent of passes against the Jets.

Pace : Jets' D was 'mediocre at best'

Considering there are about 12 QBs on pace for 4000 yards this year (only 2 reached 400o in 2003), Cromartie's coverage has been excellent this year. Unfortunately, he is a bonehead so he will occasionally look foolish, but you can't expect your teams number 2 CB to play much better than Cro has.

Watch other teams and tell me how their Cb's cover/tackle. Cromartie is a bonehead and isn't the best tackler, but unless you think the Jets should have elite players at every position you should be happy to have bonehead cromartie on the team.

You guys are insane. Cro is TERRIBLE

I'd rather see Wilson get beat than Cro. At least we'd know what we had there. Cro is a waste of money over the average replacement.

    AFC East Stock Watch

    FALLING

~ ~ 3. Darrelle Revis, Jets cornerback: It wasn’t a typical shutdown game for Revis. Johnson made some tough catches and gave Revis more trouble than any receiver I’ve seen this season. Most of the plays were not for big gains, and the Jets said afterward that the game plan was to keep everything in front of them. It’s kind of odd that a receiver catching for 75 yards on Revis is considered a bad game. But that’s how high his standards are.

Leonhard boos fans for booing Sanchez

It's rough when you get booed before the game, but that's what happened Sunday to Mark Sanchez -- and at least one of his teammates didn't like it.

Jim Leonhard said Tuesday he was "disappointed" and "frustrated" that Sanchez received a rude welcome from the crowd at MetLife Stadium.

"I think we have a great crowd,” Leonhard said during his weekly radio spot on WFAN. "I think probably for one of the first times, I was kind of disappointed. Our starting quarterback gets booed in introductions…. That’s frustrating when … As players, you kind of turn to each other and say, 'You know what? I guess we’re in this one today by ourselves. We can’t rely on the crowd to give us that energy because it’s already started off on a bad note.'

"So I will say that this past weekend was really the first time that I’ve been kind of frustrated going into a game, which is bad."

Sanchez and the offense were booed a few times throughout Sunday's dramatic 28-24 win over the Bills. Ironically, the Jets are playing well at home this season (5-1) after going 4-4 and 5-3 in Rex Ryan's first two seasons."We obviously understand the fans," Leonhard said. "We’re all frustrated. It’s not just you guys. The players are frustrated as well. The coaches are frustrated. The only way we can right some of these wrongs is by going out and winning games. We just want that crowd to have our back, which we know they do. But (if) they’re not going to give us the benefit of the doubt sometimes, we got to go out there and prove it week in and week out at home as well."

Cook goes to Ravens on waivers

Backup S Emanuel Cook, whom the Jets released Monday in a surprising and curious move, was claimed on waivers Tuesday by the Ravens. To replace Cook, the Jets signed S Tracy Wilson from their practice squad, which was expected.

The Jets didn't give a reason for cutting Cook, a contributor on special teams, but sources said it stemmed from an incident that occurred Monday at the team's conditioning workout.

Exactly what I said about him after he was scorched on here after the Bills game. Speaking just on defense right now .... he's been lights out and everything we paid him to be. That Brad Smith play was straight fluky. Brad admitted this much when he said he tried to bat the ball away cause he knows that going up against Cro in practice and Cro can pick that and Brad thought about it being 1st down and having good field position. The ball then took a fluky bounce right into his hands. Fans on here actually think Cro made a bad there when in actuality he had such good coverage that the receivers wasn't even trying to catch the ball lol. Like I said after the game ... Cro's been money this year aside from the Raiders game. If was iffy against Dallas but that TD Austin caught on him was fluky as well. OVERALL however Cro's been money ... the muffed punt was ridiculous but he shouldn't be back there. At worst you just throw Tone back there to call a fair catch. Cornerback wise ... Cro is having a much better year this year than last year and this time he's actually paid. Thats a good sign ... He got his money and actually has told Rex he'll play offense, special teams, and etc ... most guys get that check and say forget it. Cro's the perfect complimentary corner for Revis and they'll only continue to get better.

I agree with the article. Cro has been solid. I didn't even think he has a bad game in Oakland, I thought the refs were calling that game very tight.

They have put him in bad situations on special teams. I have no problem with him being a returner but to be effective he is going to need reps in real games, not in practice. Can't expect him to be effective only returning one kick every few weeks or so.

If you take away the two fumbles on special teams I don't think that anybody would be complaining about Cromartie. Unfortunately for Cro, in both games he fumbled he either gave up a TD or was penalized.

Like I said many times, Cro has a thankless job. He is playing opposite the best CB many of us have ever seen. Not to mention that Revis is a beloved figure. Nothing he does will ever compare.

Only thing I complain about is that I wish he was a better tackler. Tackling is all about heart and effort, there is no excuse to be a poor tackler.
