Maybin has best sack rate in the NFL (players w/5+ sacks)
When the Bills cut first round bust Aaron Maybin (+2.2) back in August, they canít have expected it to come back to haunt them like this. On Sunday, Maybin had two sacks and three pressures in 28 pass rush attempts and Ė after leaving the Bills with no sacks in two seasons Ė he now has five sacks in just 110 snaps. Thatís an average of one every 22 snaps, the best sack rate in the NFL for any player with five sacks or more. Most of the pressure he generates is a product of his relentlessness, which even helped him to make a play in coverage on Sunday, as he hustled across the field to make a tackle for a loss on a pass into the flat. His grade would have been much higher if he hadnít been flagged for two penalties, although one of those was offset by another penalty anyway. Having only used him for eight snaps in total during their recent two game losing streak, the Jets need to ensure Maybin gets on the field more often, because heís playing like one of the best situational rushers in the game right now.

Great job by the FO to bring him in and the CS to develop him.

Why didn't we play him during the losing streak?

I understand limiting his snaps against the Broncos, but he should have had at least 20 plays against the Patriots.

I had the same thought, but then flashed back to a couple of draw plays the Pats ran directly at Maybin the previous game with pretty good success. I wonder if they were hesitant because of that ...

Another 20 pounds in the offseason hopefully makes Maybin less of a weak link in the run game. Johnny Abe was terrible against the run in his first couple of seasons but eventually became decent (if not good) at handling himself on the edge.

WTF is that quote in your sig? Please tell me a real person didn't actually say that...

I think Maybin is coming along nicely. For the longest time he had only shown one move, a speed rush around the tackle. But Sunday he showed a nice inside move. Unfortunately the tackle just hopped on his back and it wasn't flagged. Did anyone else see it or was I imagining it? What are the rules in that situation?

I think the Jets need to coach him up some more and convince him to try to gain at least 20 lbs in the off season. Jets have a good strength program. Two guys that come to mind are Lowery and Wilson. Both were very skinny when drafted and got bigger and better throughout their Jet tenure.

If he was in the 250 range he may be able to play on every down. And I don't think he will lose much any speed at that weight.

I hope he continues to get better because. Sometimes is takes a couple of years for the lightbulb to go off and sometimes it takes a coach willing to put a player in the correct position.

Who knows with his size and speed maybe they can coach him up to be able to cover some of these big TEs. At least bang them on the line. I know it is a longshot but he has the athletic ability.

It's going to be just that easy for him to gain 20lbs in one offseason? I wonder why he didn't think of that before?

There have been a couple of rumors. He juiced for the combine and then went off the roids. Another being he is very body conscience and would rather be a body builder than football player. Another is that he was very sick this off season and lost 20-30 pounds.

These are just a couple of things I have read around the internet. Don't know if any of them are true. But I remember him at the combine. He was like 240-250 and looked really big. Then the next time I saw him, he was very skinny.

Who knows. Only thing I know for sure is the kid is very young and he hasn't matured yet. Every player gets bigger within their first handful of years in the league. I expect him to get bigger and stronger.

Maybin has been a good pickup but still needs a lot of work. Currently he is purely a speed rusher but doesn't have a lot of strength (he gets knocked off pretty easily). If we can help him develop into an every down player (and bulk him up this offseason) he can end up being an absolute beast.

Considering what he cost the Jets (nothing), they don't need him to play every down. They just need him to play more on possible running plays. Don't ever see him on short yardage team.

pure speed rusher who attacks edge. coverage sack specialist. seems like a nice situational player who is young with a potential to be come a more complete player at reasonable price.

Gonna be VERY interesting what kind of contract he gets after this season, hopefully it's on the cheap and with the Jets but pass rushers are very hard to find and he may have several suitors.

Agree he needs to pack on more weight starting last month and throughout the offseason and also diversify his passrush moves. Already he has paid big dividends to the Jets as pointed out by the OP.

I am watching the game again right now and there is no doubt he was held right in front of the ref.

Not too long after was the penalty for the hit to Sanchez's head, which they never showed in replay. I think it was a first for Sanchez this season.

I really wish he had the build of Pace instead of Cromartie. Would be such a beast.

Maybin's impact has been great, but let's put this stat into perspective -- he's only on the field for obvious passing downs whereas the others he's being compared to are two or three down players.

Rex said he had 4 other pressures aside from the sacks and that he also made a huge play on a screen. Like I said during the pre-season ... he's a play maker. Bottom line is that he makes plays. Let him be a situation type of guy or a slight liablility in the run game .... I don't care. Its all worth it cause of the plays he makes. Both of his sacks stopped 3rd down conversions ... He's a monster ... Our issue last year was not generating any pressure on 3rd down situations ... especially 3rd and long. Maybin has been HUGE for us in those situations. If only Pace stepped his game up or anybody else rushing off the edge opposite of Maybin. I really think Big Mo is set to finally step up his pass rush game ... He's starting to look better when busting up run plays for losses or no gains ... I think he's getting it now and he'll step it up in the pass game. If he does that .... our D will start to look much much better.

at the risk of losing his burst... he's a speed rusher they need to preserve his speed.
