Really, if you were just interested in blocking a team like the Rangers from getting a guy like Darvish, you could have posted a bid of $100 million, then offered him a 2 year deal at league minimum.

He'd turn around and go right back to Japan, you wouldn't lose a penny, and your rival doesn't get the guy they wanted.

Do you have an example of this?

Do you think it is right to “block” Darvish from playing in MLB with such a move?

No, it's a hypothetical that could happen. What's to stop someone?

Of course it isn't right. But as it stands, it would be within the rules.

Maybe I'm just a lower form of life because I thought of it before any GM in baseball did.

In fact, I would consider doing it just to expose the flaw in the system.

Ok... but why not fix it now before it happens?

By the way, if someone did it, there would be little he could do. If you are the highest bidder for the rights to negoiate and he rewards someone else, you take Selig to the cleaners.

I imagine a court could throw out the entire "posting auction" system.

Is the auction even covered by the antitrust exemption?

Certainly the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters are not covered.

It all seems hokey to me

Pretty much my point. The whole thing is hogwash. Not surprising though for baseball. Amazing sport seemingly run by Keystone Cops.

Hypothetical question: would you rather have Darvish and Montero or Pineda and whoever they get to replace his bat?

Obviously Darvish and Montero.. but the price of Pineda we can hypothetically have Pineda and Cole Hamels.

What are Darvish’s and Montero’s career MLB stats?
