No of course you cannot take the bible literally an allegory is one way of putting it.
Its unfortunate that many people make religion look bad and us stupid by saying its literal when there are many contradictions in the bible or outrages sayings like you pointed out.
To me much of Genesis and the Garden of Eden is about what happened in the spiritual realm not talking about this world.
Its also written by the spiritual conciseness that the human mind cannot comprehend.
There is a lot clearer lessons in the bible such as donít lie, cheat, steal tithing, forgive etc
These principles removes sin and or keeps you from losing your way.
The essence of the spiritual life at this time.
One of my favorites is not to swear to things.

James 5:12
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

There is no need for me to swear to anything especially when I was not even there.(Genesis or miracles)
But applying principles as God asks not to lie.
I cannot start swearing to things is commonsense and works well from keeping me from lying to myself. Most important!
some parts are very literal and some parts are in symbols that the bible explains what they mean in other chapters and verses but in now way does GOD ever contradict himself or lie.
