I remember him from playing with the Düsseldorf Panther, where Sebastian Vollmer started as well. That's two Germans at the East Coast now.

Glad to see Berning back. He was beastly in the final pre-season game last year. He was knocking the crap out of everyone on the Eagles' O.

I think he briefly made the team after the cut to 53 before later being cut. He has some potential, and he plays nasty. He has a chance to make the team alongside his college partner Nick Bellore this year, especially if Bart Scott doesn't return.
He should've made the active roster last season.

I have no clue why we decided to go with McIntyre.

I would hardly say he was the best LB last preseason. He showed promise and potential but still had a world of work to do. Took a number of wrong steps (nearly blocked Bellore on one play because he read the ball and running back instead of the pulling guards which is probably the single most important key for an inside backer), didn't scrape as well as you'd like. But DID show some potential. I can see him being the 4th ILB if Bart Scott does not return. In my opinion of new/JV backers this past preseason would be:
    Mauga
    Bellore
    Eddie Jones
    McIntyre
    Berning
Seriously?

    He's horrible.
Again, I assume he was a guy that the other 31 teams had a shot to take a look at and sign? It appears that no other team did just that...

This was the mantra by the Maybin detractors.

    How about some new material.

The same Rex Ryan who admitted he didn't have the pulse of his team?

The same Westy whose ST unit was mediocre to poor?

Yeah they both had solid seasons.

Sorry but that argument doesn't hold much water anymore.

Only to you! In case you did not know Rex is still in charge and Westy is still the special team guru. Until they are fired what they say will hold a lot of water. What fans still means nothing.

    Elaborate.

Statistics or analysis of technique will be acceptable forms of proof.

By no means did I think he should have been on the team (especially in favor of a guy like Eddie Jones and at the time Aaron Maybin whom I liked to make it from the gate in the preseason), but horrible he was not. He was further ahead than Berning simple as that.

What would you like me to do?

Break down every snap he had?

    He's slow. Has no instincts.

He's an OLB and can't cover nor pass rush nor hold the edge on sweeps.

    Cannot shed blocks.

Disappears and is ineffective on ST.

In my mind, he provides absolutely NOTHING to this team.

I'm sorry if you don't like my use of the word "horrible," but if the shoe fits...

You really think Cruz is talented?

That's pretty good without analyzing every snap. I can especially remember instances of him rushing the passer and setting the edge to force the run inside. He played most of the Denver game and I came away thinking that he played better than I thought he would. On specials, I can say with decent confidence that he was near a pile on special teams more times than not. Did he make the play necessarily? No. Invisible? Hardly. He also forced two fumbles. I never tried to make a case for the guy to go to Hawaii, nor did I suggest he was the best back up linebacker, but that he was A. not horrible and B. better than Mathias Berning. I promise you as little as McIntyre did, which wasn't much, it wasn't any less than what Mathias Berning would have done. Berning is a nice prospect, I like him to be much better this summer. I would even say that he will push Bellore for the 3rd/4th inside spot, but from what I saw in August, he was NOT better than Garrett McIntyre.

It's a pretty sad day and very telling as to how bad the Jets were this year when people go out of their way to justify the presence of Garrett McIntyre.

I hope Matthias Berning can prove his value.

Wasn't trying to do that. Was stating he was better than Metthias Berning.

Its good to see that there are some knowledge-able fans still around here in the off-season.
...WORD!!!
He had some bad luck this season, couldn't be picked up by any other team during the season cuz of regulations and work visa.

    NEWSFLASH:

McIntyre sucks, and will not be on the Jets roster on Sept 1.
Berning & Mauga & Eddie Jones & Westerman & Pace will be.

Big off-season roster shake-up coming on our defense (LB's and Safeties)

    You heard it here first...
