Taking The Minivan Out, Testing The Snow Tires

Got 4" of snow on the ground in Bergen County, mostly unplowed. Taking the 2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite out for its maiden voyage on the new Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires.

Will give a full report when done, update from the Bagel Emporium in Midland Park if all goes well.

24 years of driving with all-weathers. You could probably get away with summer tires in jersey

At Bagel Emporium, out of plain bagels hoping the wait isn't too severe.

SAR I 4" of snow is no true test for the snow tires. But good luck and be safe there are other idiots on the road today. They think cause they have a 4x4 they can conquer the world.

First off, it's the wife's car, we've got 3 kids and lots of sports equipment to lug around. It's the most expensive minivan money can buy, the safest too.

While not as bad as last year's storm, today was interesting because it was looser snow and unplowed. Got to really put the Ody through her paces. I don't have Nokian studded snows (car is too new, they don't make them yet) so I had to take Blizzak's and I must say the traction was very good. Turns with limited fishtailing, in reverse on the completely untouched driveway cut through like butter. From a complete stop at an incline, the Honda's traction control is a bit too limiting, but with it switched off went nice and straight, a bit of a twist in the back but nothing too bad.

Stopping was accurate and straight. Most people don't realize that one of the major benefits of dedicated snow tires is stopping ability almost moreso than traction.

All in all, very pleased with the new van and the snow tires. It is now SAR rated for family use.

Thanks FF2R. I appreciate you taking the attention off the Patriots for a second to voice concern for a fellow ex-New Englander. I made it home safe, the kids are very relieved.

GMC yeah, not the best test but the only one I've had the opportunity to try since I put the snows on the car. It still amazes me how gullible people can be with the "all wheel drive!" and "all-season tires!" marking crap that's out there. Car and tire companies should be held accountable for all the needless accidents they cause.

Even if it's only once or twice a year, you get dedicated snow tires. It's as simple as that.

I'm pretty sure that you can spend more money on something other than a Honda but I guess we'll settle at that.
