Steelers might be letting go of Hines Ward

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7564969/pittsburgh-steelers-plan-keep-hines-ward-report-says

Veteran leader this team needs.

I think he would come very cheap. Don't expect anything other than him being a leader and a solid blocking WR or maybe a 3rd down guy in some spots. I think his presence in the locker room would far outweigh any production on the field. But the Jets need somebody like him since they are in all likelihood losing LT. Not to mention he may help the Sanchez-Holmes situation.

Wouldn't mind seeing him in Green and White.

1. Does he want to come here?

2. We still need another WR, so the roster would be:

Holmes
Kerley
Turner?
Ward
Speedy receiver to be named later (bigger priority).

3. He had 46 receptions last year, for an 8.3 yards per catch. That's beyond awful. Is he done on the field? He can't just sit there and be a leader. LT shows on the field that he's valuable. Ward can't just come in here and "be a leader".

its time for the jets to get younger and faster, not older and slower. i think it will be a bad move.

I am not suggesting the Jets sign him to be a go-to WR. Hines Ward is not going to put up big numbers. If anything he is likely to put up worse numbers than last year.

I am suggesting they sign him so he can come in, teach the younger WRs a thing or two and be a leader. I am also hoping that he will help mend the Holmes-Sanchez relationship. Ward can easily be a 4th or 5th WR on this team. Maybe even a 3rd. Lets face it, the Jets dont have many good WRs and they are not going to spend money or a draft pick on a big one. They are moving away from the passing game in 2012.

I think with this QB and the style of offense the Jets are going to run, a guy like Ward would be valuable. He can still block. He can move the chains and be a possession WR if need be. But most of all he will help with the communication between Sanchez and the WRs. The Jets are going to be running the ball a lot and in all likelihood there will be a point in time were Holmes gets frustrated again. I think Ward will be able to help in these situations. The Jets missed Cotchery last season. He would have been the one to step up and smooth things out.

Jets need all the veteran leaders they can get on the offensive side of the ball. If/when LT leaves there will be a gaping void. Moore, Brick and Mangold are not going to be leaders.

1. Probably not.
2. Yes. Ward is not the answer, the Jets still need a talented WR.
3. You are underestimating what a leader can do. The Jets are more desperate for leadership than any team in the NFL. We took for granted T Rich, Jones, Cotch, Woody. There is no stat to measure what they brought to the locker room. Leadership is more important in football than any other sport. 11 men have to play as 1.

I expect Rex to have a better "pulse" in 2012 but I do not expect him to be able to do everything by himself. He needs a guy who the players look up to and will not question.

Reports are that he is 100 percent NOT going back to Steelers.

Perhaps Tanny will trade away our future with picks to get him....

We need someone to add speed, not a "past his prime" receiver.

Some of you guys are way overblowing the leadership factor. Ward is finished

I said this in the other "let's sign HW" thread. He is literally a pat on the head away from being concussed. Pass at any price.

Hines Ward was a great receiver, but we need existing players to step up and be leaders !

After the 2011 edition of the NYJ I am not sure how you can say this with a straight face. But if it is your opinion, then you are entitled to it.

This would be the preferable situation. Either way I hope they just get some leaders on this team, especially the offense.

A leadership player that has nothing left in the tank is essentially a coach. Don't want to waste a roster spot and I doubt guys like Santonio will respect a guy who can't play.

ummmmmm. Nope.

And hell no to Ward.

Wasn't there anther thread on Ward? I want to know Vins take on this. My feelings on Ward is about the same as my feeling on BE. I loved Ward back in the day but his best days are well behind him. At best he is a physical #3 and we already have a good #3 option. Where as a will admit he is a better locker room presence I find it hard to believe he'd be all that motivated to actually give it his all to win. I just don't want to spend 1+ mil on a 4, 5 option and get older. If he wants to play let it be for a team more desperate for talent.

Signing Ward would be like the Glen Sather Syndrome (which he has since cured). Signing has-been stars as if they were in their prime who just can't do it anymore.

There are people that leaders on the team, and are stepping up (Mangold, Revis for example). The main leadership will have to come from Rex. You need existing players on the team to step up as leaders, not bring in someone that is unfamiliar to most of the players and think he's going to get their ear.

Keeping Ward on the roster is a waste of a roster spot, especially in the WR corps which is already in crap territory.
