Do you know what TV needs...

...I really don't watch much TV anymore, all these talent shows, reality shows, and lame dramas are unwatchable imho, what might be a breath of fresh air could be the recycled old variety show format.

    remember the:

    Carol Burnett Show

    The Flip Wilson Show

Pink Lady and Jeff (fishing for Borgo)

    The Sonny and Cher Show

    The Smothers Brothers

    The Jackie Gleason Show

    ---

Would these types of shows even be possible in this day and age? Would they be too expensive? They are paying Howard Stern a boatload of money to be a judge on a talent show, how about paying some real talent to have their own show? Every movie these days is a rehash of an old idea, no thinks in Hollywood anymore, perhaps some enterprising TV exec sould actually come up with something worth spendig an hour to watch, even if they stole the old jokes, and mixed in some new singing acts.

    LOLz.

But seriously folks...sadly this format is dead. Too expensive to produce, too much work, and too low ratings.

It's too bad too because I loved the format too.

they were usually summer replacement series, think about it, if they gave Howard a few weeks in the summer, his radio show always has good guests, comedy, and music, a guy like him could pull it off. I'm sure there are others.

The Carol Burnett Show was a sketch comedy show and it's format has lasted for decades - since the dawn of television really - Your Show of Shows on down to SNL.

The musical variety show died with my grandparents generation, altho America's Got Talent is basically the same type of entertainment presented in the context of a competition.

My wife has a pretty stressful job, so she will actually watch these shows mindlessly. I pretty much have to leave the room, because I cant help myself from commenting or making pained groan noises even after I promise to keep quiet. We've had some brawls over it.:D

Just from reading around here, I see that there are some pretty cool shows on... but finding them in the sea of channels or remembering when they are on is beyond my skillset anymore.

I tend to click through HBO, the sports channels... then I'm done.

me too, I check the movie channels...lacrosse is over so no more games to watch there, I can't sit through many innings of a baseball game anymore. I did record The Hatfields & the McCoys on the History channel, so I can watch that at some point :D

these variety shows were more than sketch comedy though, at least some of them, yes they were similar in that respect to AGT however there was some actual name talent involved. If a group is willing to sit in with Howard on the radio to promote something, get asked brutally honest question, and then do a performance, that is usually terrific, I can't see why this would not work on TV again.

There are some good shows on, but you have to know about them to find them. I watch three shows weekly: Mad Men, Top Gear (the Brit version), and Deadliest Catch. The rest of my tv viewing is random sporting events. The NBC sports channel is good for random rugby/cycling/Limeys throwing darts in the middle of the night.

Reality TV is the worst, but there are about a billion channels so there are a ton of great shows out there too...

Can't wait for the return of Breaking Bad this summer or Sons of Anarchy this fall.... Dexter has gone downhill, hopefully it bounces back.
