When you were a plumber, did you pipe your customers' hot water from the heater directly to the sewer?

Radiant heat is not the same as convection. Convection warms air, while radiant heats objects and people via infrared radiation.

If you have a mantle between the fire place and the TV it will help deflect the heat quite well.

My set up, I channeled out room for a conduit to run from behind the TV to the lower cabinet to the right that holds the equipment before I installed the cabinets and tile on the fireplace. Also added an electric outlet behind the TV and used an articulating TV mount to ease in hooking every thing up.

    nice setup

If heat's a concern, consider putting it over your fridge.

Does that dog eat brains? Looks demonic. Prolly doesn't approve of the TV location.

BonPaul, as with all things electronic, the less heat the better. That said, I don't think it's a major issue. What is a concern is how it will effect your viewing experience if it is above eye level. Something to consider.

Also, go to AVS forums, it's a great resource for stuff like this.

Or....Just mount the TV on the opposite wall and put a mirror above the fireplace. Two TV's, B*tches!

I didn't even get that far...

I was too distracted by the creature below peering at me; one who seems to belong in some type of M Night Shyamalan film...

Might be okay as long as you don't do what I did when in college and half smashed and tried to cut up the month old evergreen Christmas tree into large hunks and burn it in the fireplace.
