The Jets made a trade Monday to acquire tackle Jeff Otah from the Panthers.

Otah is coming in to compete for the starting right tackle job with incumbent Wayne Hunter. But Otah arrives with plenty of questions of his own. The biggest is: Can he stay healthy?

He has played just 29 games over four years due to left knee injuries. Otah played four games last season. The 6-foot-6, 340-pounder was a first-round pick of the Panthers in 2008.

I reached out to a league executive to get his thoughts on Otah and the Jets pickup:

“I think the player was going to get moved and if the Panthers couldn't, they could have released him before they got camp started - maybe the Jets could have gotten him for free. I think Carolina was through with him.

It had run its course. Injury, dependability, weight a question. Some question of ‘want to.’ There are also questions of health, durability concerns and ability to do what’s necessary to avoid injury, stay healthy and return to health.

“There's some questions on this player for the Panthers to give up on him so quickly at this age and affordably allow a team to acquire him for nominal considerations. But, maybe it's low risk/some reward if can get back to form at a position of need.

“Otah certainly has tools, youth on his side - but a lot to prove and regain.

He has natural size, strength and inline mass but has some space and sustain limitations especially when he gets in space. He can anchor and play in the box and has straight ahead strength but the further space he plays in, the more he gets taxed.”

He's still better than Hunter who is a sure thing to get beat when he's in space

No excuses the jets were the better team that day.

    1. Do you think this jets team is better than that jets team?

    2. Do you think this years patriot team is better than that year's team?

What are you going to hang you hat on a game two years ago. The next year it will be 3 years ago. Oh those heady glory days.

What posts do you consider trolling? Pointing out that the guy has not played effectively since nov of 2009, and the only time he played during that time was 4 games. And that his knee was still swelling enough last month during mini-camp, so that he was not able to get on the field.

most fans both pats and jets agree that it is a signing with little or no downside.

But some jet fans are going over the top, penciling him in as the starter when he has not even been able to get on the field.

Dude--most Jet fans would pencil him in as the starter even if his name was Pee Wee Herman considering how sh*t-shelled we were with Hunter last season.

    Funny damn stuff right there.
I meant only to say that both teams are performing on similar levels over the last three years. No question the Patriots have been the better regular season team. Neither of us are satisfied with where we are, but the performances over the three years are comparable, like it or not.

Jeff Otah, when healthy, can without question become a top 5 RT in today's NFL. The question is this, how much of a setback has he suffered in regards to overall development, talent and/or skill wise after missing consecutive seasons due to injury? Knee injuries. Is he a shell of what he once was, or can he fully recover into the player that he once was (pre-injury), can he recover from this injury moving forward and last but not least, will he ever be the same not only physically, but also mentally? There are lots of "if's" surrounding this situation, I just hope to see Jeff Otah recover from injury sooner, rather than later. Ferguson, Slauson, Mangold, Moore and Otah could become something special, but at the same time... We'll have to take a 'wait and see' approach in regards to this addition (Otah).

Over the past 3 years, the Pats have 3 AFCE titles, an AFC Conference chamionship and another Super Bowl appearance.

The Jets have none of those.

How can you say with a straight face that the two teams have been "comparable" over the last 3 years?

How many playoff wins do the Pats have over the past 3 years? 2 How many to the Jets have? 4

An argument could be made that both teams have enjoyed similar success. That said I'd prefer the Superbowl appearance and AFCE Championships.

Patriots win on regular season. They won an AFCCG. Jets advanced further 2 out of 3 years including ousting the Patriots personally. Jets have more playoff wins. The Jets have finished higher 2 out of 3 years, which is the true measuring stick - you are overvaluing the regular season. It's COMPARABLE.

Yea, that was a great pole, but Shakin wasn't able to pull the trigger for a final climax.
