They were a top 5 defense last season. They had some weaknesses that prevented them from becoming elite. We couldn't cover TE's and RB's due to a lack of speed and coverage ability at Safety and LB. The safety position looks like a strength this season. The DE position is bigger and faster and younger. Speed was added at the LB position. Maybin is bigger and more prepared. Sapp is coming on. Demario adds speed and depth. All of the weaknesses were addressed. It was a great job by the FO.

The last weakness preventing elite status for the D was an offense that sucked. It remains to be seen if that was addressed. IMO just dropping Schotty was addition by subtraction. This area however remains a ?

My response was to a specific poster who made claims of "fact" and not "dreams".

I just requested why he felt the Jets defense made this dramatic improvement during the off-season.

Is it fair to assume improvement from Maybin? Answer Yes. He has had a full offseason and TC to increase his knowledge of the defense and has also added 15 lbs (which I will concede will probably be about 10 lbs) after TC. This coming after an excellent first year in a limited role.

Will Wilkerson improve? Answer Yes. Again, first time with a full offseason and TC. 2nd year player who started 16 games as a rookie. No reason to think he would take a step back.

Is it fair to assume that EITHER of Bell or Landry will be an improvement over smith/pool? Answer again is yes and lets just focus on Bell. Bell is an excellent in the box defender, something that Pool was not and he is simply faster than smith, so he will have more range. Landry is a huge question mark, so for the sake of this argument, I wont count on him being the impact player we HOPE he will be.

The players who potentially will decline are Pace, BT and Scott all of whom have been setup by the organization to have reduced roles this year, and have those snaps taken up by younger, faster players (see Maybin).

Will opposing teams hit 29-30 FGs vs the Jets? Answer No as that led the league last year.

Theres 5 reasons why we should improve and that is not including a THING from Sapp, Coples or Demario - all of who have exhibited the ability to contribute this year.

I'm with you. I think Coples will be a beast and Maybin could be lethal. We may finally be able to get to the QB without an all out blitz...The first time since Klecko and Co.

He's actually listed as a MLB. Shows how much you know.

The Jets defense is an example that something in total is better than its parts. I give credit to Ryan and Pettine for that.
The Jets have one outstanding player (Revis) and two very good players (Cro and Harris). The rest are eh. Do a ok job but, well, eh.
    It's the scheme.
The line is so so - Coples included. I remember the delusions relative to Gholston, so I'll take a wait and see.
Ther LBs are older than dirt. Davis - we'll see. Low level of competition in college.
Safety? Bell is ok. Landry an injury in waiting.

(He is 6'2 325, which is enormous) If healthy, hell become a force to be reckoned with. It's something to look forward to.
    Don't forget - he's got a sleek nickname - MTV.

The deciding factor though will be whether he can stay in there with the big boys. Do you know how big he is, per chance?

If Maybin and Sapp come into their career fruition here.

If Coples is who I think he is - a beastly force on the D-line

If Wilk takes another stride forward

    If Ellis continues growing.

If we have 3 legitimate MLBs to rotate in there. Keep 'em fast and fresh

If Landry & Co come together healthy. That secondary!!

God. this is first time i've been this jacked about defense.
    I'm always positive about D, it's O and ST's I dream about.

still don't think we have that yet. I think we have flexibility up front and all that and I'm excited about Sapp (unproven) and Maybin (lets see if he progresses) ... too many unproven guys up front to think our defense will just be top notch. I still worry about Landry's health, Bell in deep coverage, & us getting a pass rush without Rex's exotic blitzes. Can we cover a TE this year? That remains to be seen. I expect great things from all corners but I don't know 100% what we'll get from the safeties in coverage and pass rush up front. Do we even have a guy who can get 8 sacks? What is Coples? We don't know .... Rex talks up Big Mo comparing him to hall of famers but he hasn't proven anything. There's too much ambiguity with the defense to just chalk it up as a sure thing. The potential is there but we'll see if its exactly where we want it to be.

Also too much Sapp optimism. He's fast true but the guy has never done anything on a NFL football field in game situations. We don't know where he's at mentally and we don't know how react out there. I hope he's been developed well by Rex and staff ... we'll see.

    3. Be a good tackling defense. - very important and overlooked IMO. Leonhard was as sure a tackler as there is. I think our tackling last season was not as good as it was in years past.
    4. Force turnovers.

We would be a Top 3 defense in points and yards that plays consistent. Not #5 in yards and #20-something in another category.
    I'll go one further with:

    5. Defensive Scores

For as good as this defense has been since Rex got year, they've never scored a lot of points on defense IMO. If that improves that could easily be the difference in the Jets winning at least a few more games.

I would still be more scared to play against the Giants. They have 4 proven pass rushers, the Jets are hoping for 1, Revis is a baby is going to dog it until he gets a new contact. Landry and Bell were let go by 2 teams that could use help at s.

I hear you is this early greatness in camp a result of a horrible sparano offense? (He is the same guy who sxcked in Miami)

No one prepares or plays as hard as Revis. One of the most competitive players in the entire league.
