The Jets can play Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Aaron Maybin and maybe even Wilkerson at end in the 43 on first and second down, with cloggers like Pouha, Dixon and DeVito at DT. In a 34 set, Coples obviously is not needed to be on the field. There are a lot of DL/OLB on this team and they'll all be mixed and matched.

The PFT article excludes a key component from Jenny Vrentas's original article.

The part of your quote I bolded doesn't matter because in the Vrentas article it states that Coples is still the starter in base four man fronts as well as rushing down four man fronts. The only thing Coples is not a starter in is the base three man front; that will remain the same as last year's unit. And Vrentas said that they ran only about four plays from that set in yesterday's practice.

Like I said, the PFT leaves out a bit of pertinent information. The bottom line is that he'll still be playing more than 50% of the snaps. IIRC, Wilkerson played something like 60% of the snaps last year.

I would settle for news that he is pressuring the passer or making a tackle for a loss against the #2 and #3 OL

Remember the scouting reports said he had a tendency to take off a lot of plays. Physical talent but what's going on in his head?
First signs of a Gholston watch?

Gholston did nothing for 4 years.

Coples has two weeks of practice under his belt.

That comparison is totally ridiculous at this point in time.

It's amazing how many fans want to put the blame on Rex . . . when in the end THEY are the ones making mountains out of molehills.

Rex said he expected the guy to start -- so what?! But now we get a (somewhat inaccurate) report that he won't be doing everything day one and BAM -- "Stupid Rex, why did you have to say that! Why couldn't he leave well enough alone! Why does he have to alienate the entire team and put unrealistic expectations on a kid who might never recover from them!!"

If our team is this fragile, we're not going anywhere anyway. Rex speaks his mind and will likely do so as long as he's here. If the media doesn't like it, they should stop asking questions that provoke such answers. If fans don't like it, maybe they should stay off sites like this and just stick to watching the games on Sunday . . .

BUT, it's also ridiculous to think this guy (who lazied it up last year at NC) is going to be a super game breaker as has been claimed.

Yes indeed. The first rule about not talking about comparisons is talking about not talking about comparisons.

    TX is a sneaky bastard.

Did he "lazy it up" his junior year? Or in HS? Or Pee-Wee's? Do we have ANY reason to think he's a slouch except for a ridiculously tumultuous season at UNC?

The guy was considered the top defensive prospect in the country going into last season, so yes I will be VERY disappointed if last year ends up defining his NFL career . . .

All of this goes away with a practice or two which brings news that he beat a 2nd stringer and made a sack.

So how long will it take for you and the rest of the sky is falling crew to stop comparing every draft pick to Gholston?

Imagine how relevant any of this would be if the season started this weekend?

How many pages will be wasted here only to see him named the starter in a few weeks?

There is a little difference between being one of "the sky is falling crew" and happening to observe that the sun has not come out yet.

We have other capable veterans who can play though

DWC will have none of that, he's already predicted this will be the best Jets defense of all time.

Completely agree. Coples not starting was the more likely scenario - but big mouth has to make this into an issue.

He said he's changed but he has done nothing to support that fact...

    The team is still in-fighting
The team is still saying ridiculous things
Holmes still says whatever he wants
Rex still hypes himself up and puts a target on the back of his team.

I was really looking forward to this team simply keeping their mouths shut and taking care of business...But the head coach simply can't control himself, therefor holding no legitimacy to condemn his players for similar actions.

So now we look at HS? C'mon.
It's lately that counts most. The word people like is consistent. (If it's good). It's not like he was a 3rd rounder. More is expected. And WAS early from Rex.

Idiots. Every village has one or two. Your village has far more than most.

    Compliments. A very precise observation.
