    Better than last year?

I fully expect our DL/pass rush to improve, so any decrease in the Pats OL would only accentuate that improvement.

Might not be enough, but the way those games usually go a little advantage can go a long way . . .

Patriots always lose players and recover surprisingly well.

They'll break the NFL record for fewest sacks let up in a season or something ridiculous like that.

    That's a lot of uncertainty.

No, that line-up would definitely be worse than last year. With the exception of LT (where Light, though a warrior and fine technician, lacked the elite physical tools of Solder), every position would be a downgrade from last year.

But I think even that downgraded line would be around league average. That means some teams who could not exploit their line last year would likely have more success doing so this year. But no way do I see a Steelers OL-style disaster brewing on the Pats even if Mankins and Vollmer go on IR and Waters remains retired.

True. Could be famous last words, but the Pats have plenty of OL depth and the coaching to survive even the retirement of Gallery (who was getting rag-dolled in practice supposedly and was looking like a potential cut) and the long-term losses of Mankins, Vollmer and Waters.

Btw, this thread just confirms how ridiculous the bellyaching was from Pats fans and the media when Solder was drafted last year. Thank goodness they didn't draft Ingram or Jordan like so many had hoped.

True that. He's no Jeff Otah that's for sure.

    They do?

The Jets are missing 3/5 of their starting OL this year, including their pro bowl and best OL'n on the unit?

    LOL

Donald Thomas. Former Dolphins starter in '08 and '09 that had a couple of major injuries (lis franc and torn pec) that looked like they would cut short his career. Seems healthy now and looked good as a reserve for the Pats last year.

I'll take the Jets O-Line over the Pats O-Line any day of the week and TWICE on Sunday.

I'm actually not sure on whether this hurts or helps the bust argument but just to clarify... He was not drafted as a guard. He was drafted, and played his first 3 seasons, as a tackle. He was drafted to be the LT in Oakland for many many years, but eventually had to be moved to guard because he couldn't cut it.

Ahh the good ol 2004 draft. When i would have killed for Sean Taylor (no pun intended), Roy or even Reggie Williams. We ended up with Vilma which turned out to be a great pick.... for a few years.

He has to be classified as a disappointment from what he was considered coming out of college.
Alot of the blame has to go to the Raiders organization, why he never developed into the player he was suppose to be at LT.

HE played in a different system and he could have maybe developed into that LT everyone thought he was going to be.

That wasn't the case as HE went to the Raiders and the deep vertical passing game. Every pass play(not some ) were where the QB was going to drop back seven step drops every time. (there was no three or five step drops) Those long pass patterns take time and that putting a lot of pressure on a LT to keep a QB clean. (almost impossible in today football to ask any LT to block like that) . Art shell as good as he was couldn't play LT in that type of system in today's football.( The pass rushers are just too quick and too much space for any Lt to protect)

As good as Dbrickshaw Ferguson is you ask him to block in that type of system he would be a bust too. He struggled last year when Jets threw the ball more and that was with a very short passing attack. You put him in that exact offense system and Ferguson would have done just as bad. That is a fact.

This was a good risk for the Pats if it paid off they would of had more depth on a very good pass blocking line. As for Gallery though, it was once thought that this was a can't miss guy but in the end this is just another bust who proves that there are no sure things in the NFL.

As it stands right now, or even if Volmer and Mankins and Waters come back for the start?

Mangold is a very huge up grade over Koppen
    2010 Dbrick over Solder- 2011 Dbrick=Solder
    Mankins huge over Slausen
    Waters huge over Moore
    Vollmer huge over Hunter

Reserves= Cannon, Connolly and Thomas over Vlad and what ever Rex chooses

The reserves on the pats are much better, Gallery loss hurts as he could have filled in at both RG and RT, but he was behind Connolly and Cannon

Just like last year, the Pats will hang 35+ points on the over-rated Jets defense embarassing them twice during the season.

Gallery was drafted as a tackle and then later converted to a guard.
