Love Carton or hate him--he will never pull punches in an interview. His schtick is just schtick, but when he gets someone on that needs to be asked tough questions--questions the listeners REALLY want asked and not just softballs--he asks them.

The real problem is when fans tune in and expect journalistic integrity out of a show that doesn't even try and pawn itself off as anything close to that type of show.

Only a few years back Manesh was considered by this board as the best jets writer out there.

Now Vrentas has the crown for the time being.

Thing is though, "journalistic integrity" and the use of unnamed sources aren't mutually exclusive. The can go together quite well.

The question is the reliability of the source, and whether or not a writer can confirm the information with other sources.

Mehta has definitely gotten worse with the snarkiness since he's been with the NYDN. Hate him or not, Leberfeld theorized that the shift in Mehta's tack is because he is angling to get hooked on with the NFLN. Who knows.

Guy I couldn't stand that has gotten better, IMHO, is Brian Costello. He can be a bit hard on the Jets, but he is better than everyone else not named Vrentas.

    Make things up?

Inept reporters and papers that need to sensationalize everything to try and sell their rags will ALWAYS be a part of NY sports. What the JETS under Woody Johnson have become are feeding this insanity. What should have been learned from the Bret Favre experience is that there is no quick fix. That most of the time, the big splash is all fluff. Trading for Bret Favre was a colossal failure. It was a stroke of luck and HUGE favor that Favre retired because you know that the JETS did not have the balls to sit or cut him. It would have become more of a media circus had Favre continued to be a JET. Fast forward to Tim Tebow, another player that is not worth the media circus that he brings but leave it to the JETS to welcome him with open arms AND GIVE UP PICKS FOR HIM!!!! Guess an extra OLINE man wouldnt help this team right now, but then again, OLINE-men dont make headlines. Right when we are moving in a good direction it appears that all rational thought on how to build a team is thrown aside to win the battle of the back page.

Wasnt Kerley being groomed to fill Brad Smith's position? Thought he did well enough last season to become that type of player. Ran the wildcat last season with success. Thought the JETS would increase his role this season. Scratch that idea for the most controversial back up QB the NFL has ever seen.

BTW any news on the Giants, Pats, or Steelers? I wonder why? Guess they are more focused on winning games rather than declaring themselves the best through inept reporters and papers that need to sensationalize everything to try and sell their rags

What the hell are you talking about?

Another 3 paragraph rant that is based on nonsense?

Kerley, he was groomed? Which team and games did you watch? You think Kerley is better suited to run the WC? BTW, who would be whining like morons if the Jets traded a 4 to get Smith back? Everyone would be thrilled. You can't deal with TT, we get it, so you carry on and on about the demise of the team over a WC performer.

Pats and Steelers news? Guess you missed the Big Ben rape accusations, the Holmes rants, the HC selection process? Plax shot himself, no one covered that one. Jacobs and his big mouth, nope. Stahan fighting with Tiki, Tiki at any time. No, it's only the Jets, sorry. Our owner has discovered how to steal the headlines, not only here but nationwide.

It all changed when he transitioned to the Daily News. It's clear what the Daily News demands of its beat reporters. And it does not match the professionalism required by the Star-Ledger. I'd imagine that if Jenny Vrentas one day moves over to the Daily News, we would start to see a marked difference in her reporting. I'm not exhonerating Mehta here... after all he bought in to to being the Daily News' sock-puppet, but that rag's sports pages live off of sensationalism.

Sorry JN, I have very little confidence that this group can get it right. Seems like things non football related are too important to the owner and HC. From begging to be on Hard Knocks, to chasing Peyton Manning, to denying chasing Peyton Manning, to trading for Tebow, to Holmes and Cro's comments with no disciplinary actions,to Rex claiming he is the best defensive coach in the NFL, to TWO wasted days of practice concerned about back to back days of brawls is enough by itself. To think that this is all AFTER the the FO promised fans that they would to get back to hard work and dedication to winning is absurd.

Winning of course will change this. I just dont see how we are building championships with so many non football distractions. IMHO, it seems like the JETS with Woody and Rex at the forefront are welcoming it.......

The only thing I'll say about the Jets "bringing this on themselves" is not through they're player moves, but the amount of access they continue to allow the media to have.

Favre - Favre was a great move and anyone who says otherwise is full of crap. He had us at 8-3 coming off two straight wins, at New England followed by a utter dismantling of the 9-0 Titans at Tenn.

Then Favre got hurt, and the coaching staff didn't have the balls to pull him which led to the team's collapse.

Tebow? Tebow is here to do exactly what they've always said he is here to do. Compliment the offense in the wildcat package and be a back up to Sanchez. IMO this has always been a great move for the Jets as they had the most success in the last 40 years of this franchise in 2009 and 2010 when the "wildcat" package supplemented the offense.

The problem with Jets is that they KNOW the NY and national media is not there to report, but are there to SENSATIONALIZE. Despite this, they allow ESPN unfettered access in week one of training camp. Despite this, they allow every Tom, Dick and Harry with a blog media credentials.

Rex can't complain about the media over sensationalizing a routine practice fight, when the fact of the matter is that the Jets routinely invite the media to have intimate access with the team.

I know there are NFL rules regarding providing media access to the the team, but if the the Jets are going to complain about the type of coverage they're getting, then they need to limit the amount of coverage allowed.

What prevents them from providing the bare minimum coverage required by league rules? Does ESPN really need to have Rich Cimini, Jane McManus (sp?) Sal Palantonio et al following this team 24/7? Start pulling some credentials and telling the media NO.

This is exactly what Santonio ranted about 2 weeks ago. He may not be a "leader" but he sure as hell called this one as he saw it.

Yes, 2 winning seasons, two trips to the playoffs, 2 trips to conference finals, not one losing season. How many teams have managed this?

Only Jets fans manage to complain about this kind of opening 3 seasons by this group.

I can see why people should think they cant get it done.

And they have no choice what so ever. They cannot deny ESPN access. Part of the deal when ESPN doles out tons of $$ to cover MNF etc. The NFL gives them the access, not the Jets.

Credit where credit is due and the JETS came up big when they got to the playoffs.

But the regular season was not as convincing. Both playoff appearances were achieved with much help from other teams. Both loses in the playoffs were because our defense couldn't hold the lead and spotted the opponent a 24 pt lead.

We also did not necessarily just "lose" last season but undeniably self destructed in ways that get HC and GMs fired.

That fact that none of this seems to be changing is alarming

but I still am having trouble understanding why this dude copernicus, who claims to be a jet fan, hates the Jets more than it seems that the fans of the Pats do at this place.

It would seem to me if you hate something as much as he seems to, you'd just find another team or hobby you enjoy a little bit more. Going through life as miserable as this guy seems to be can't possibly be healthy

Obviously I don't know all the drama and backstories of the last decade of this place and what they did to copernicus, though so maybe there is a sane explanation for his hatred

    Actually 8-8 is not losing.

It's mediocre but it's not losing. And no one, anywhere, gets fired after what they achieved the two prior seasons.

No matter how much sh1t you imagine happened to the team.

I don't disagree with you that the NFL requires access, but there's no way the NFL required the amount of access that ESPN had last week.

That was clearly a result of ESPN calling the Jets and saying, can we do this and the Jets agreeing.

    I found this: http://www.pfwa.org/2012MP.pdf

Don't know how reliable it is but if it is accurate I'd like to know what the term "accredited media" means and who grants those credentials. I'd also like to know how someone becomes "local media (those who regularly cover the team)"

It seems like there is some wiggle room that would allow the Jets to allow only the bare minimal access....if they really wanted to stop this nonsense.

Manish's journalism has deteriorated in the past year
Vrentas is by far the best
