    Jets are cool on Cooley

The Jets' injuries at tight end, coupled with the Redskins' release of Chris Cooley, have fueled speculation (mostly among fans) about possible interest in the former Pro Bowler.

Ain't happening. The Jets have no interest in Cooley.

And I can't blame them for feeling that way. Cooley is 30 years old and has missed 20 games over the past three seasons, including 11 last season. He's basically an older version of Dustin Keller, a pass catcher more than a blocker. The Jets need a sturdy blocker at tight end, not another receiving type. They have Keller and Jeff Cumberland, who is returning from a concussion.True, the Jets haven't replaced the versatile Josh Baker (season-ending knee injury), but I suspect GM Mike Tannenbaum will find a body over the next few days.

The would-be journalists who dislike the Jets have to make a decision early in their careers if they want to be taken seriously, or just have fun taking potshots. A lot of these rankings are okay, but ranking Sanchez 31 puts him behind all but one of:

    Gabbert
    Weeden
    Tannehill
    Locker
    Kolb or Skelton
    Ponder
    Wilson
    Palmer
    Cassel
    Bradford
    Alex Smith
    Freeman
    several rookies

That seems reasonable for a guy who went to AFCCG his first two seasons.

Great effort by ESPN once again.

    Bloody Friday, cut-down day

Friday is the bloodiest day of the year in the NFL. Rosters must be pared to 53 by 9 p.m., which means the Jets have 22 pink slips to hand out. There's always a surprise or two. This year, most of the speculation is focused on FB John Conner. Other veterans on the bubble include WR Chaz Schilens, LB Ricky Sapp and CB Isaiah Trufant.

    Our projections :

LIKELY GONERS : QB Matt Simms, WR Joe Collins, WR Royce Pollard, TE Hayden Smith, TE Tarren Lloyd, OT Paul Cornick, OG Fred Koloto, OG Matt Kroul, OT Dennis Landolt, DL Damon Harrison, LB Brett Roy, CB Donnie Fletcher, P Spencer Lanning, CB LeQuan Lewis.

ON THE BUBBLE : Conner, Schilens, WR Jordan White, WR Eron Riley, TE Dedrick Epps, DT Martin Tevaseu, DE Jay Richardson, LB Marcus Dowtin, Sapp, S D'Anton Lynn, CB Julian Posey, Trufant.

Even if Schillens gets on the field at some point, history suggests he won't last 4 games. Why are we even considering wasting a roster spot on him.

    Jason Smith solid in debut

Jason Smith is a quick study. After only one meeting and an abbreviated practice, the former Rams first-round pick started at left tackle Thursday night and played the entire first half without any glaring mistakes. The intial play for Smith, acquired Tuesday in the Wayne Hunter trade, to play 10 plays."I thought he held up well considering he had been here for one meeting," Rex Ryan said after the Jets' 28-10 loss to the Eagles. "I was proud to see that young man compete like he did."Obviously, they scaled back the offense for Smith. The Jets played mostly backups, so it was going to be fairly vanilla anyway. Smith credited OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo, saying, "He basically simplified four weeks of training camp into one day. ... It was a crash course."

Smith faced a rookie, second-round DE Vinny Curry, most of the half. The Jets allowed two sacks in the first half -- one by RT Austin Howard, another when a player came free on a stunt. Smith, projected as a backup at both tackle positions, was pleased with his Jets debut."I came out of it with a right mind, and I came out of it healthy," he said. "I enjoyed the time I spent out there with the other guys, learning to play like Jet."

Jets begin to pare roster, Conner safe

The Jets began to cut players Friday morning, and the only news is that FB John Conner is safe, according to a league source. The final cuts are due by 9 p.m., meaning there's always a chance that could change. But unless an upgrade shakes free over the next 24 to 48 hours, the Jets will stick with Conner. The season-ending knee injury to FB/TE Josh Baker may have saved Conner. The Jets are roughly $5 million to $6 million under the salary cap, but the word close to the team is that money will weigh heavily into decisions as they finalize their 53-man roster.

No surprises among the early cuts, with sources confirming that G Fred Koloto, G Matt Kroul, G Robert Griffin (sixth-round pick), TE Tarren Lloyd, WR Eron Riley, WR Joseph Collins, DE Jay Richardson, NT Martin Tevaseu, LB Brett Roy, CB Julian Posey, S D'Anton Lynn and P Spencer Lamming have been waived.

(These cuts are unofficial and have yet to be announced by the team.)

The remainder of the cuts should be uneventful. WR Chaz Schilens, who missed the last three preseason games with a high-ankle sprain, is likely to make it, a source said. See the previous blog post for the names of those likely to be released. The Jets have to cut a total of 22 players. They will be releasing players throughout the day. They also have a practice scheduled for noon.

    ~ ~ 3. Demario Davis.

Remember when Ryan compared Davis' leadership skills to Ray Lewis ?

That was back in April during the draft, and it made for a headline, of course. Davis finished a quiet training camp with another quiet performance. He started and played most of the game, but he was credited with only one tackle. Early in the game, he missed a couple of tackles, plays in which he was fooled badly. He has a ways to go. It would be a surprise if he contributes early in the season in the sub packages.

    Unhappy

    ~ ~ Howard's hiccup :

RT Austin Howard was the only projected opening-day starter to play in the game. Let's face it, he's inexperienced and needs the work. He got off to a slow start, surrendering a sack to DE Brandon Graham (an Eagles draft bust) on the first series. Know this: Now that they have Smith, the Jets will have a short leash with Howard. If he struggles with Mario Williams in the opener, it wouldn't be a shock to see Smith at right tackle in Week 2.

    jets announce 15 cuts

The Jets released the names of 15 cuts Friday before practice. There were no surprises, as all of the names were previously reported. The roster is down to 60, which means seven more have to go by 9 p.m.One draft pick was waived -- OT Robert Griffin, a sixth-round choice from Baylor. If the Redskins claim him, he can reunite with his former college teammate, the other Robert Griffin (wink, wink).

The rest of the cuts :
WR Joseph Collins, LB Marcus Dowtin, G Fred Koloto, G Matt Kroul, P Spencer Lanning, CB LeQuan Lewis, TE Tarren Lloyd, S D'Anton Lynn, CB Julian Posey, DE Jay Richardson, WR Eron Riley, LB Brett Roy, QB Matt Simms and NT Martin Tevaseu.

Barring any surprises, the final seven cuts are likely to be WR Royce Pollard (injured), CB Donnie Fletcher, LB Ricky Sapp (injured), OT Paul Cornick, DT Damon Harrison, OT Dennis Landolt (injured) and TE Hayden Smith.
