“Right now, I’m thinking that we’re going to be okay,” Ryan added. “Look, I don’t know exactly what’s out there. We don’t know who’s going to be cut from other teams…. I don’t believe you’re going to find somebody right now that can be a starting right tackle ahead of who we have. We’ll see how Austin plays.”
I'm cool with this. I would prefer the Jets wait for the cuts, rather than get hosed on a trade.
looks like hunter is the blocking TE now. may actually work.
That's what he was before Woody got hurt, and pretty good at it. Hopefully his confidence isn't completely shot. My theory is that he reads these boards, and I blame you guys for crushing his confidence. Thanks a lot.
Who knows but if you assume a new OL coach, guaranteed money and Hunter's back issues the Jets gave him the benefit of doubt. They probably exhausted every trick in the book other than hoping for some magic to keep Hunter as the starter..
Not only that but it's hard for a FO to admit that it may have made a mistake.
I'm flashing back to the one game Everett McIver experiment up in Buffalo during the Coslet regime when Bruce Smith nearly decapitated Boomer Esiason on one play when McIver (who never played tackle in a live NFL game before) false started because he forgot the snap count. Boomer got concussed on a dead-ball play.
So now Hunter is a GREAT blocking TE. Fine. Superb player.
And Rex said previously that Hunter was just fine at RT and doing well.
And that he would make Gholston into a fine player.
And Sanchez was just fine. And Greene was a real horse. Slauson - wow. Vlad - good drive blocker. Blah, blah, blah.
Jets used Hunter as a tackle eligible 6th blocker many times from 08-10 and it worked quite well. I'm glad Hunter is back to a role where he can acually help the team.
As for Austin Howard, at least he's big and will be tougher to throw around in pass protection like Hunter was. And Howard will help in the running game. He's huge, he's more of that prototypical "road-grader" that you can run behind.
The Jets bread and butter in 09-10 was running off the right side. Now they can get back to that.
Ok I'll bite. Exactly what is a jumbo swing tackle as opposed to a blocking tight end?
Swing Tackle just means he will back up both the Left and Right Tackle positions. Jumbo is a blocking TE with a Linemans number. I believe he must check in as an eligible receiver since he is the last man on the line of scrimmage. Something a true blocking TE would not need to do.
