Jets are paying Smith $2.45M this year, source says (Hunter's salary). Rams pay the difference ($1.55M). Analogous to Curry situation. #nyj

The way it works is Smith signed new contract w Rams before 4 p.m. with a $1.55M SB. Traded to Jets after 4 p.m

Nice job by Tanny. The Rams are the ones paying the extra $1.5m.

    @RichCimini
Jason Smith gets new deal from Jets, who will pay him $2.45 mil (Hunter's salary). Smith got $1.55 mil sign bonus from Stl, so he keeps $4M.

The Rams must have really wanted Smith out of there.

    Allow me.

On paper, we won the trade. But we are still paying a backup (one with concussion issues no less) $2.5 million b.c of what Tanny did in February. This is slight improvement to a big mistake.

Wow - great negotiating by Tannenbaum. We upgraded our backup OT for no extra cost !

It's not an upgrade until he plays better than Hunter.

    Maybe that's why this happened.

... we have one of the best GM's and one of the best coaches in the game ...

... they gambled hunter would be able to turn the clock back to replacing woody in the playoffs performance ...

... instead he completely $h*t the bed this preseason ... they had a young stud waiting in the wings who played better than we ever could have imagined sun. night ... now they shipped hunter off for a replacement that could not possibly be any worse ... and certainly can be better ... even if only marginally it is an excellent move ... getting them to cover the extra salary cost was just pure genious ...

... i've said it before and i'll say it again ... we are very lucky to have mikey t at the top of our football pyramid ...

"I don't have a time that Mike will be down. I will keep you posted as best I can." - Jets spokesman on Mike Tannenbaum presser today.

    Where is Jason Smith?
That Dan Leberfeld is owed an explanation from the GM right now! How dare that Tannenbaum do his job, scouring the waiver wires with his round table of guys, trying to find the right players for the right price!

Seriously Dan, the team has more important business to attend to right now than helping you sell ad space. Thanks.

I agree completely. EVERY TEAM has certain problem positions or weaknesses. One of ours is RT. But this wasn't entirely Tannenbaum's doing...The Jets HAD a plan and invested a high pick (2nd round) on Ducasse with the backup plan being Hunter. Neither worked out. These things happen sometimes. The strategy was there, they were planning for the eventual retirement of Woody, but with lots of money already invested in guys like D'Brick and Mangold you can't break the bank on one particular unit like the OLine and go get another very expensive guy or spend another 1st round pick. It backfired and the Jets are trying to improve the situation...even if just incrementally.

The Jets have a done a good job trying to balance the cap across all the units on the team. DLine and our pass rush was a MAJOR problem and the Jets have now started turning it into a strength. Who knows, maybe Coples, Wilk, Ellis, etc. will be so disruptive that we'll really increase the turnovers and give our offense a short field....which they'll really need.

    so wait

we got a player who may be better than Hunter and may be worse (although worse than Hunter is arguably lower than Arena or UFL levels IMO) and it cost us no more money

A spectacular job by Tannenbaum.... again
