4 punts in the preseason for Cleveland with a 50.5y average, 3 of them inside the 20.
Jets announce they have claimed P Spencer Lanning (South Carolina) off waivers.
Conley better watch out, cause this kid can punt the lights out. I remember watchiing him at South Carolina and wishing we had him.
If this guy Lanning shows us anything, i would cut Conley in a heartbeat. Our team needs to win field position battles and Conley was a liability with that all last year and was abysmal in the Giants pre-season game.
Why did the Browns cut him?
Looks like he was beat out by ex-Jet Reggie Hodges
Better than Conley that's for sure. 44 yard net average for SC.
never seen him, no idea of his talents, and yet I am sure he will beat out Conley.
What a great pickup! I am excited to see this guy punt although i hope we don't see him punting too often
Was hoping Jets would snag him late in the draft. Love it. See ya Conley.
... and these ...
The Jacksonville Jaguars have released punters Nick Harris and Spencer Lanning, Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports. Jacksonville selected Cal punter Bryan Anger in the third round (70th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, making both Harris and Lanning expendable. Lanning was signed to a one-year, $390,000 contract and will be subject to waivers.
... and some nice info from thejetsblog ... minus a spellling error or two ...i'd think the highlighted part below has to mean poor results from podlesh ... but i'm too tired to try and research that to be 100% sure ...

#Bears place waiver claim for P Spencer Lanning but are blocked by #Jets who also made claim. Team searching for fill-in for Podlesh.
Lanning is on a minimum salary one-year contract and has obviously been brought in to compete with TJ Conley, who had a disappointing game against the Giants last week. More on Lanning after the jump…
Lanning, an undrafted rookie from 2011, was in camp with the Bears last season, but lost out to Adam Podlesh. Despite the fact he didn’t punt two well – he punted three times and one had a 27 yard net and another was blocked – the Bears were reportedly hoping to get a draft pick for him. He had been looking outstanding in camp, according to this report
He spent time with the Jaguars at the start of the year, but ended up in Cleveland where he was competing with ex-Jet Reggie Hodges for a job. The fact that the Bears tried to get him back (Podlesh currently has a hip flexor injury), shows he is still in demand, which might be more than you could say for Conley.
In preseason this year, Lanning had punted four times (47, 49, 52 and 54 yards with a net average of 43.5 yards). Conley entered last week with a ANPP of 60% although that improved to 64% thanks in large part to a fortuitous bounce in the Panthers game. By way of a comparison, albeit with a smaller sample size, Lanning’s ANPP this preseason is 76%, although factoring in last year’s results drops this to 68%.
For an explanation of ANPP, go here.

The Bears put in a claim for him.
