You know what? They're trying.
So this is probably going to be the next big story right?Nineteen of the Jets starters are absent from practice today, including quarterback Mark Sanchez. That's because they are doing off-site leadership training at a site in Bedminster.
The football staff -- coaches and front office members -- did the same training in June, an rigorous session of team-building and leadership drills, led by a former Army Special Forces operator.
"When I looked at the schedule, this was really the time to do it," coach Rex Ryan said. "We just had such a great experience as a coaching staff, and I'm hoping the players had the same kind of experience we had."
Most of the starters are not scheduled to play in tomorrow's preseason finale against Philadelphia, so the timing makes sense. Players will be back by 2 p.m.
The team's plans were to put the coaches through the training first, because leadership starts from the top.
"It's just a reminder of what it takes and how difficult the task is to all be in one accord and doing it the right way," secondary coach Dennis Thurman said back in June of the training, after the coaches went through it. "And when you do that, that also filters down to the players. When they see we are all together, the players say, 'OK, they’re all together.' How can we not be all together?"
Brady Hoke, the Michigan coach, had his core group of players attend a 3 day program with Navy SEALS to work on teamwork, leadership, etc and most everyone raved about it.
I think it is a good thing for Rex to do with the players....
This is a positive step. Hopefully Holmes listens very carefully.
Don't kid yourself some media clown will spin this negatively
Being that Santonio was tweeting about Madden 2 hours ago I am assuming he is one who didn't go.
Rich Cimini @RichCimini
Looks like Holmes is there.Leadership group includes Sanchez, Tebow, Holmes, Revis, etc. Sanchez and Holmes sitting around campfire? Chemistry problems? What probs?
Rex told Coples to be at practice but he was a no show and ended up in Bedminster at the leadership training.
From Sooth's article:
No need for the injured leaders—Dustin Keller, Mike DeVito and David Harris—to feel left out, they weren’t allowed to go.
excellent news from jets camp. its stuff like this that will finally put the jets over top this season. i bet the type of leadership skills the players learn should at least add 2 more wins to our season. great job. SB here we come baby
For all we know it was a miscommunication between Rex and Coples. Manish isn't Dick Cimini quite yet but he's known for being melodramatic from time to time.
