Patrick Willis hurt and Sopoaga out for JETS

Well even though Willis "Participated" in practice he can't be 100%. So this has to be a break for the JETS, especially with Sopoaga out as well.

    GO JETS!!!

Patrick Willis, Isaac Sopoaga avoid serious injury, X-rays negative

The 49ers suffered a scare during their loss to the Vikings this past Sunday, as defensive starters Patrick Willis and Isaac Sopoaga had to be helped off the field in the fourth quarter with leg injuries.

San Francisco fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief, however, as x-rays came back negative for both Sopoaga and Willis. Willis had left the game with an ankle injury and Sopoaga with a knee injury.

Willis' injury was officially a mild right ankle sprain, but that did not slow him down. Willis was in full pads participating in practice on Wednesday and should be able to play this Sunday against the Jets. Sopoaga, meanwhile, suffered left knee and ankle sprains. Sopoaga's injury led to him being held out of practice. CSN Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco tweeted Wednesday Sopoaga looked stiff while walking before practice.

Having both Willis and Sopoaga available would benefit the 49ers in New York, as the Jets like to run the football and are currently tied for sixteenth in the league in rushing. The two have seen their tackle numbers dip in the past three games due to facing pass-oriented teams in the Packers and Lions, but could be needed when running backs like Shonn Green and Bilal Powell. Willis has a combined 25 tackles on the season, while Sopoaga has five.

Should Sopoaga not be able to play in Sunday's game against the Jets, defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois could start in his place. The fourth year man out of LSU can bring familiarity and experience in Sopoaga's stead, as he has played in all 16 games for the past two seasons. Jean Francois started two games last season, against Tampa Bay and Washington.

Willis also has an able backup in middle linebacker Larry Grant. Grant started three of the final four games last season when Willis was hampered by an injury. With Willis participating in practice though, it appears as if he'll be able to play, with Grant spotting him just in case.

SF doesn't even need Willis to be awesome. Bowman is just as good.

Hopefully Willis plays. It would be nice if the 49ers are at full strength and the Jets can beat them, and at least it sounds like Willis is basically going to play unless there's some kind of big setback for Sunday.

49ers won't have any problem shutting down our running game even if Willis isn't 100%. We need to air it out. Keller should be back. Go 4 wide as much as possible and spread the field.

Sounds like it may be a good time to unleash the wildcat AND throw out of it!

Not opposed to this. The way we've ineffectively used the wildcat so far (broken handoffs, reverse plays) has looked Schotty-like. Tebow was teh centerpiece of our off-season, screw it let him throw.

Even if they don't play, the likelihood of our offense capitalizing is slim at best. We couldn't do jack against Pitt when they were missing Harrison and Mr. Head & Shoulders.

People want Tebow throwing against the 49ers. LOL.

I like throwing the ball, but we don't have 4 receivers to do it with, unless we're splitting out Keller. Nevertheless, if we've got 4 guys off of the line, how the hell is our protection going to hold up? We need a TE chipping Howard's man.

San Fransisco covered the Packers when they went 4 wide. You don't think they can cover Holmes, Schillens, Kerley, and Gates long enough to get to Sanchez?

The Vikings had success throwing out of running formations. The 49ers were also preoccupied with trying to stop Adrian Peterson. I don't think Greene strikes that same fear into defenses, just a guess.

No linebacker 1 week removed from a sprained ankle is "A-Okay" he will be slow in pass coverage. It doesn't matter how he plays the run cuz Green will just run into him anyways.

    +1
Ankle injuries for LBs are never a good thing! Those pig piles are hell on defenders legs.
Jets need to move the chains & keep that 49ers D on the field & change field position.
2nd half when shot wears off is when Willis won't be feeling as good.
Need to try to go deeper to force those LBs into coverage & make Willis run on that bad ankle all day.
