Bears Cut Former 1st Round Pick OL Chris Williams

    Another Pete Kendall?

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story...gn-zack-bowman

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears have released former first-round pick offensive linemen Chris Williams and re-signed cornerback Zack Bowman to a one-year contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Williams started 38 games over five seasons after the Bears selected him with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Williams bounced around the offensive line where he spent time at left tackle, right tackle and left guard. The veteran began the 2012 preseason in competition for the Bears' starting left tackle position but ultimately lost out to current starter J'Marcus Webb. Williams had been a healthy inactive the last two games versus Dallas and Jacksonville leading up to his release.

With Williams no longer in the picture, starting right tackle Gabe Carimi is now the only former first-round pick taken in the Jerry Angelo era remaining on the roster. Angelo was let go as general manager after last season.

Missing on Williams hurt the Bears because they were in such dire need of young talent on the offensive line after the veteran crew who paved the way for back-to-back division titles in 2005 and 2006 began to reach the end of their professional careers. Angelo didn't focus on the offensive line in the draft as the team had great success plucking seasoned linemen in free agency such as Ruben Brown, John Tait, Fred Miller and Roberto Garza to put around star center Olin Kreutz.

But eventually, it was time to replace most of those players, and Williams was supposed to be the first block in the rebuilding process.

Now, Jonathan Scott is the unquestioned swing tackle for the Bears moving forward.

As for the return of Zack Bowman, the Bears likely brought him back to help on special teams as the club deals with a couple of injuries to core performers Sherrick McManis (hip) and Blake Costanzo (thumb). The odds of Bowman competing for any time at cornerback seems remote at best, given the great seasons turned in by Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman, not to mention the depth provided at the position by Kelvin Hayden, but Bowman is a good special teamer and could help in the short term.

Bowman left the Bears in free agency after he made 16 starts at cornerback from 2008-'11. A former fifth-round draft choice, Bowman led the team with six interceptions in 2009 but fell out of the starting lineup early the next season.

The Bears also terminated the practice squad contract of defensive end Aston Whiteside.

Don't really know anything about him. I remember analysts were high on him in the draft. Is he starting material, or just a depth guy now?

considering we have such stalwarts as Vlad Ducasse, Jason Smith, Caleb Hasselhoff and Dennis Landolt as our primary OL backups, i'd say he's worth at least a closer look.

I watch the Bears a lot, and I think Williams could eventually be a decent Guard. The Bears did him no favors in his development by starting him as RT, the shuffling him all over after that. His health is an issue, but he is athletic with good feet and could be a nice pulling Guard if he can focus on playing Guard and not being shuffled all over constantly(while battling injury at the same time).

He definitely wouldn't be worse than Ducasse.

We really could use a tackle more, but we will need a guard soon with Moore not having too much left, and Slauson being no better than average. If we have an injury at guard, or center we will need another backup, as Slauson will move to center and Vlad to left guard. He is playing quite well there for the people that are ignorant of that fact. Being able to fill in at tackle in a pinch would be a plus as well.

This guy couldn't get playing time on the worst o-line in the NFL, why is he worth discussing?

The Bears are the worst line in the NFL? Check out a Cardinals game. Or a Rams. Or Eagles. The Bears don't even have the worst line in their own division.

I just did a quick search on this guy. 6' 6" - 315 pounds. 1st round pick in 2008. Had a back injury early on and pretty much spent the last 5 seasons at three positions on a schitty O line and coached by none other than gawd awful OC Mike Loveboat Tice. More recent was a hammy but if anyone can coach him up, Sparano can.

I think he could be good insurance & play like a Jet. Sign him if healthy.

The Bears may not be the #1 worst this year, though they are still pretty bad. He has been on the team since 08 and their was a stretch their they were the clearcut worst.

Ah, ya beat me to it. I thought Williams was his nephew though.
