NFL players vote Tim Tebow “most overrated”

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 25, 2012, 9:36 AM EDT

In a poll asking NFL players to name their most overrated colleague, Tim Tebow won in a landslide.

Tebow, the Jets’ backup quarterback, was named the most overrated player by 34 percent of the players in a survey conducted by Sports Illustrated.

So who’s the second most overrated player in the NFL? That would be the guy Tebow sits with in the quarterback meeting room every day: Mark Sanchez, who came in second and got 8 percent of the vote.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo also got 8 percent of the vote, followed by Eagles quarterback Michael Vick at 4 percent and Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis at 3 percent.

Surprisingly, both of last season’s Super Bowl quarterbacks, New England’s Tom Brady and the Giants’ Eli Manning, got votes for “most overrated” as well, with Brady garnering 2 percent and Manning 1 percent.

Sports Illustrated asked the same question in a survey of players last year, and Tebow, who was then with the Broncos, also came in first. But last year he only had 22 percent of the vote. So Tebow’s fellow players think he’s only getting more overrated with time.

I still dont see how Sanchez is over rated?? Who is saying he is so good? I dont know anyone in the media or otherwise that is touting Sanchez as a good NFL QB. Every media outlet has a countdown to when he will be replaced as starter. Most rank him in the bottom third of the league, just dont see where he is getting over rated.

I agree with Tebow, but Mark? How can you be overrated when everyone is constantly trash-talking you and saying you suck? Joke of a list is a joke.

How is Sanchez "overrated"? No QB with a completion percentage under 50 is thought highly of.

IMO, Phillip Rivers is by far the most overrated QB in the league.

They do these stupid polls every year, and it's always littered with players who are pretty good. Tom Brady and Eli Manning made this years list. Derek Jeter is always among the leaders in the baseball list. You might as well rename it the "Who are you jealous of all the attention they get" list. Means nothing.

Well, there must be a lot of NFL players reading this site then because it is the only place where Sanchez is over rated.

To be fair to both Tebow and Sanchez, the players on the top of these lists tend to be NY players (cowboy players). For years, Jeter has been voted by fellow players as the most overrated, mainly because they are jealous of all the attention he gets.

SI had a poll of players to determine the most overrated baseball players and of course the top two were Yankees:
    1. Alex Rodriguez (16.8%)
    2. Derek Jeter (9.2%)

Tebow is not overrated, he is just over-publicized. The guy takes 8 snaps a game, no decent NFL talent evaluator thinks he is anything more than a glorified Brad Smith type player.

The only one who overrates Tebow is the media.. Even if the dude has one meaningless snap a game sportscasters are drooling all over the replay chanting "TEBOWWWWWWWW"..

Considering neither Tebow or Sanchez are see as viable starters by anyone around the league I can't see how they are over rated. Romo and Vick who are constantly called top ten QBs but aren't even good starters IMO are well more over rated.

Agreed. Rag arms don't win Super Bowls. Also, I don't like QB's with rag arms having an attitude.

Talking A DECENT COMMENTARY ON SANCHEZ/ TEBOW

    =

Sunday witnessed Sanchez, a quarterback who has been left for dead by many over the past few weeks, go into a hostile environment and statistically outperform Tom Brady in his own house. Yes, Sanchez’s 28 completions on 41 attempts gave him a season high 68.3 completion percentage, nearly 7% higher than Brady’s 61.9%. Additionally, Sanchez’s 328 yards were greater than Brady’s 259. Outside of the poor interception, there is no statistical argument for which quarterback played the better game.

Statistics aside, this game saw a growth of Sanchez that we have not seen since the quarterback arrived in New York. When have we seen Sanchez take his team 92 yards down the field in the 4th quarter, on the road, on 9/10 passing and a touchdown to set his team up with a chance to take the lead? In his 4th season, people will not want to hear it, but the USC product is still growing, and Sunday proved just how much room he still has to achieve that growth.

Now, as far as Sanchez’s future with the team is concerned, we can sit here and discuss how the QB has been given an unfair slate to work with including a budget wide receiver corps and the acquisition of Tim Tebow, but we have repeatedly beat that drum, and quite frankly, the theme is played out and irrelevant at this point. The bottom line is, Sanchez is playing with the receivers, backs, and offensive line that he has been given, and he is beginning to play well.

LOL ... how about Mark's two fumbles?

One contributed to OT, the second was the game-choker.

Cants stand him, and no doubt Phil has had an off past season and a half, but he can still throw an offense on his back and pass his way to victory. There are only 5 or 6 QB's in the league you can leave 1:00 on the clock in the 4th, and just know they are gonna get their team in scoring position.
