    Rex Draft Input

I am the first one to agree that Tannenbaum is a horrible evaluator of talent. Actually I think it goes deeper than that in the fact that he always wants to make big splash moves so the GM gets some headlines...this is due to the fact that he is arrogant and ego driven ( just look at Hardknocks ). Doing this hurts the team because it never builds any continuity due to all the turnover on the roster...

However, people keep giving Rex a pass on these drafts which is dead wrong. He has had some picks that he made personally ( ie. John Connor and Coples to name a few)..John Connor is a complete bust and Coples we were told was the Jets version of JPP..how is that working out ??!!...so he can't coach and also can't evaluate talent...it really doesn't matter though because if Tanny goes Rex is going...I hear people on these talk shows saying they need a new GM but they would keep Rex..are these people clueless ??!...when has a new GM EVER come in and not picked his own coach ??....

many here agree with you and have stated this. manginis drafts under Tanny were far superior.

I mean.. to date under Rex, arguably the only impact player the jets have gotten through the draft is Wilkerson. What is there to compare?

Ferguson, Mangold, Harris, Brad Smith, Eric Smith, L Washington, Revis, Harris and that's 2006. And 2007 under Mangini.

2 years produced better players than any under Rex.

It was all over the media during the draft. Rex loved coples at his pro day, promised he would pick him if he was still there.

Isn't it a bit early to be declaring Coples a bust?

you have a point but I don't think you can claim rex had any real influence on the 2009 draft as a rookie coach. the main problem comes from the trading of picks to mortgage the team for a SB run and the early round draft busts in 08 and 10. the 2010 draft really was a stinker but we only had 4 draft picks total, and in 2011 we didn't have a 2nd round pick either. the jury is still out on what 2012 will prove to be IMO. here's a list of the last couple year's picks for reference:

    2008 - NEW YORK JETS
RD SEL # PLAYER POSITION SCHOOL
1 6 Vernon Gholston LB Ohio State
1 30 Dustin Keller TE Purdue

1 29 Kyle Wilson CB Boise State
    2 61 Vladimir Ducasse T Massachusetts
4 112 Joe McKnight RB USC
5 139 John Conner RB Kentucky

    2011 - NEW YORK JETS

You guys make it seem like the guy picked will be the same player for 10 yrs in the NFL. The player selection is just the beginning of their NFL career. How that player progresses or regresses is dependent on many factors with one major factor being how he is taught, coached, instilled with discipline, developed, and used by the coaching staff.

Overall, it's quite evident under Rex's watch the Jets players have underperformed and in many cases regressed.

I like coples, think he will be a good player for years to come.

Unfortunately in this day and age most people want instant gratification. Hence the problem with America today.

Ant that is entirely and to a lesser degree the fault of Woody's and Tanny's desperation in trying to win a SB quickly without building the proper foundation.

I actually remember hearing the interview with coples on sirius NFL right before the draft where he said that rex had told him that the jets would take him at #16, but it was reported somewhere like a month ago that he wanted to draft jones but was overruled. either way the jury is still out on coples... I think he's progressing okay for a guy coming to a system and being asked to play 5-technique. I think rex ryan knows a little bit about D-Lineman, so wouldn't you want his input when it comes to those players?

What? He wanted Sanchez. Said it to Tanny during Sanchez's pro day.

The Greene selection as has been posted a million times was Bradway and Clinkscales pleading with Tanny to trade up to get him. The Jets had a 1st round grade on Greene Tanny resisted initially not wanting to give up extra picks. But Clinkscales and Bradway persisted. Rex was reported to have said during this discussion that Ozzie Newsome always said "take the best player". Tanny finally made the trade with Detroit to select Greene

Totally agree...however, added to that are the fact that we have pure pro bowlers pre REX. Mangold, Brick, Revis.

Keller and Harris are solid ......not pro bowl but solid.

Why do people keep listing those Smiths as if they were great picks? Harris doesn't count twice, and he isn't that great as evidenced by his subpar play this year with Pouha, and Ellis hurting. They let Vilma walk for nothing. Coples, Ellis, and Wilkerson, are all going to be great players.

You mean he threw a 4th and a 6th into a trash can from 1300 miles away.
