    Wilkerson Concussed

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who played every defensive snap in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the San Diego Chargers, suffered a concussion in the game and didn't practice Wednesday.
Wilkerson's status for the season finale at the Buffalo Bills is uncertain.

On the other side of the ball, quarterback Greg McElroy, who was sacked 11 times by the Chargers, sustained an abdominal injury but is expected to start again this week.

Rex Ryan said he had no idea about Wilkerson's concussion until Tuesday. That he never came out of the game certainly raises questions, but the Jets' coach didn't have many answers.

"It was kind of news to me he has a concussion," Ryan said. "Hopefully, he'll be able to play."

Later, the Jets tried to clarify the circumstances surrounding the concussion. It happened near the end of the game and he didn't show symptoms until after the game, according to a team spokesman. Wilkerson was evaluated Sunday night by the medical staff, the spokesman said. He must follow a specific NFL protocol before being cleared to play.

The Jets' handling of a Shonn Greene head injury in Week 2 was called into question in an ESPN "Outside the Lines' investigation. Greene was dazed on a hit by Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Mundy, but he was allowed to return to the game after undergoing the required evaluation.

Wilkerson also suffered an undisclosed knee injury in the game.

Ryan called Wilkerson one of the best interior linemen in the league, saying it would be "a big concern" if he can't play. The game is meaningless for both teams, so it makes little sense to rush back injured players. Safety LaRon Landry (hamstring) also was expected to miss practice Wednesday, so there's some question about his status.

"Shoot, nothing is ever guaranteed, whether it's player, coach or whatever," said Ryan, explaining the incentive for a game that has no playoff implications. "For some of the guys in our locker room, it could be their last game in the NFL."

The injury-plagued Jets have lost two straight, falling to 6-9 -- their first losing season under Ryan. The organization is bracing for likely changes, possibly starting with the removal of general manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Ryan declined to discuss potential offseason moves. He wanted to stay focused on the Bills (5-10), but he didn't have much to say on the hot-button issue regarding the game -- quarterback Tim Tebow's role. Ryan refused to say whether Tebow would be active for the game and, if so, how he'd be used.

"We'll see how the week goes," Ryan said. "Like I said [Monday], Tim would've gone in the game if I had chosen to have him in the game."

That was a reference to a report in which, according to sources, Tebow asked out of the Wildcat package because he was upset by being passed over last week for the starting QB job.

I see no reason AT ALL to play him in a meaningless football game. NONE.

Empty the bench, last week Hayden Smith caught a 16 yarder, I want to see more of him. Start Sapp and Davis along with Ellis. Coples needs to play every snap, maybe he can get get 4 sacks this game and end up with 10 for the year... Lol, at this point this is what we're reduced to as fans.

As long as we don't win I'm OK with it.

This game should be handled like Preseason Game 3. Audition time only. Starters shouldn't even see the field.

Don't even bring him to the game. Send him home for the offseason.

    All of the above

I'll watch and root even though a win is worse than a loss draft order wise. Interesting to watch the young players who will replace Scott Thomas Pace Smith Pouha on D and Moore among others on O, to see if GMac rebounds from last week, to see if Wilk Ellis and Coples can slow down Spiller's big season AND to thankfully watch the end of the Teblow error in green and white

And when it's over sit back and get ready to watch Tanny be escorted out of the facility by security on Monday beginning the offseason housecleaning

If Wilkerson plays, Rex deserves to be fired.

    Rex is a dunce.

He wouldn't let Tebow play with his ribs but he is going to let Wilk play with a concussion. All that talk about if Tebow was his son he wouldn't let him play no matter what the trainers and doctors say.

Wilk shouldn't even be traveling if he has the slightest hint of a concussion. It is a meaningless game.

If Wilk is cleared by the doctors, the NFL's system for head injuries, he can play, Rex has NO say in the matter, why is this hard for so many to understand?

    Grasping at straws?

I'll leave that to you and your undying defense of this circus.

    Wait, whut?

    1) The buffalo game is meaningless.

    2) McElroy can't play because he is concussed. McElroy has minimal value to the team moving forward.

    3) Wilkerson CAN play, despite being concussed. Wilkerson is very valuable to the team moving forward.

You guys are right. Rex is a GREAT coach. We should definitely retain him as our HC. Lifetime contract.

You can't make this stuff up.

I think that you have that backwards. If the doctors say he cannot play, Rex has no choice. If they say he can play, then the choice is up to Rex.

Ray will find a way to twist that to support his comment.

My God. Even if the kid is cleared to play, why even risk any further damage?

If he is cleared to play, what is there to risk? That is the point of the system.

If he doesn't pass all testing, there is no way in hell the league is going to clear him.

WTF am I twisting? There is nothing to twist, dumbass, Rex has NO say in the matter until he is cleared.

I don't have it backwards at all

The idiots on their "bash Ryan" bandwagon are calling Rex a moron at the notion that Wilkerson may play. He has to be cleared of the NFL's head injury protocol, Rex has no ****ing say if he plays until he is cleared.
