    Dennis Thurman New D coordinator

The New York Post confirms Jets secondary coach Dennis Thurman has been elevated to defensive coordinator, replacing Mike Pettine.
Whereas Pettine gradually became the primary play-caller, handling every call during the second half of the 2012 season, Thurman is expected to share those duties with Rex Ryan. Thurman's secondary has been among the league's elite units since arriving in New York in 2009. Darrelle Revis has been the NFL's premier cornerback over that span while Antonio Cromartie is coming off a Pro Bowl-caliber season. Ryan is adamant about returning to a more aggressive, attacking style. He needs an infusion of speed, particularly at linebacker and edge rusher.

And this is why Pettine is gone.

Rex was always the "blitz first, second and always" guy.

    Pettine wasn't.

As Pettine gradually got more control, the jets D gradullay moved away from Blitzing as a primary tactic.

May or may not be the right decision, but I can see the reasoning here.

Well, to be honest, now that we have pass rushers like Coples and WIlkerson, I'd probably rather not see us blitz as much. Especially if we take OLB early in this draft too.

Well he does know Rex's system and can be counted on to deliver what Rex wants to see. I don't know anything about Thurman's demeanor, I hope he is capable of inspiring the Unit as a whole.

Seems to make a lot of sense.

Was never concerned with who our DC was going to be as that person will always be a puppet of Rex, which is good news.

The only issues are who our OC and GM will end up being.

Less blitzing after we trade Revis, too.

Lost in this shuffle is the fact that Karl Dunbar is still here.....great coach, who has an excellent track record in his career.

Wilkerson clearly thrived this season, hopefully he does the same for coples.

Gotta agree with the move of promoting from within on defense for several reasons:

    • Our defense, while not number one, is reasonably stout and we won't change the system.
    • We will need some continuity on that side of the ball while the major shake-up happens on O.
    • Thurman has done well, somewhat due to having excellent players, and has earned the spot.

Just please please clean house entirely on offense. This actually completes the symmetry:

Successful units promote coaches from within,
woefully unsuccessful units show the coaches the door.

If anyone knows that this defense can still thrive without a massively expensive top flight corner, it's Thurman.

If Revis doesn't go anywhere, it's just another poor decision by this franchise

Rex Ryan: Still Defensive Coordinator and Head Coach.

Great move. Dunbar made a positive impact on the DL. Wilks and Coples will be deadly next year. We just need a demon OLB passrusher. Lucky this draft looks stacked with a few.

Excited to see what Thurman brings to the table as DC. Good in-house promotion.
