The obvious is that under the cap limit in the nfl you just can't build an elite defense and an elite offense to field at the same time so you really do have to lean towards offense. It's possible to bring that all together for a year, two at the most, then it gets blown up because now everybody wants paid because the media tells everybody they are superstars...........
This is a false hood. Of the last teams to win the SB only 2 NY and NO have not had a top 5 D. Even Indy the year they won it won it with D. NY also when healthy was a top D as well. Oh and was not a top 5 O in either year may I add. Leaving only NO as the only average D that did win it. NE hasn't won won sense they collapsed on D.
Yep, only team left that does not have an elite D is the Pats and they have Brady.
No way you can say the Falcons D is elite or anything even close to elite after they got destroyed by the Seahawks passing game (thought to be the weaker part of their offense) this past Sunday. They were #24 this season on D for a reason.
Ravens D was not elite this year or even close, although I can buy the idea that they are a top 10 type D with Lewis back in the lineup and Suggs back from his injury as well.
Niners have an elite D, no questions. Based on how poorly Seahawks D played without Clemons, I would say that the Niners had the best D in the playoffs. They're also likely to win the SB, which goes against the premise of this article. I don't like the Pats or Ravens chances against them, and needless to say, I don't give the Falcons much chance at all.
You can't go by yards to measure a D. Os yes but Ds no you have to look at points per game. Look at Atlanta. They played about 9 games this year vs team that can put up top ten yards and move the ball. But they consistently stopped teams in the redone. That is a top D. You don't play NOX2, TBX2, NY, Washington, Denver, Dallas, Carolinax2 and Detroit and not give up some yards. Fact is they managed to stop those teams from scoring when it counted. Meanwhile Pitts faced maybe 3 good Os that move the ball regularly, they gave up a lot of points they shouldn't have. Yeah a lot of that was on there poor run game this year but the same could be said for us.
Whatever the reason the Ravens have a very average defense. Their greatness is perceived, not reality.
There greatness when healthy IS reality. Rey Lewis and Suggs missed a large part of the year. Webb, Smith, Pollard, McClain, Ellerbe all missed at least 3 games. They only had like 3 starters that didn't miss any games and they still won a bunch of games.
