I finally ditched Blackberry after having used them for years and went with an iPhone. Gotta say the thing is pretty slick. I've already downloaded a ton of apps but are there any that are essential? I've looked through some lists on the intergoogles but wanted to see youse guys like.
Here is a simple one that I use often... Flashlight. It uses the flash of the camera and is very bright. It burns the battery up if left on but for those moments that you need a quick flashlight, it's great to have. The one I have is by iHandy and it was free. But there are others too.
Pulse - I use it for all of my favorite websites & news sources, all in once place.
Evernote - use it for all my notes and random crap, and you can sync everything from your work, home and cell all in one place.
Keyring - keep all of your discount cards scanned and on your phone.
Waze - user generated traffic reporting app - a must have.
Also Yelp, Flixster, ebay, PayPal, The Weather Channel.
Oh yeah, and Big L is fond of that 'new' Angry Birds game or something.

Oh, return the iPhone and get a Samsung Galaxy S3.

Dropbox for cloud storage across all your devices. Put an Excel file into your Dropbox folder on your desktop PC and voila! It's on your iPhone, iPad, etc.
Netflix - their mobile app is really good IMO.
Soundhound for identifying songs you hear on the radio.
TripIt if you travel a lot. It organizes your itineraries, flight info, rental car, hotel, etc

What's an app?
These are the essentials:
WiFi Photo - My fave, gets photos off the iPhone over wi-fi and onto your PC via any browser. No wires, no iTunes. Magic.
Camera+ - Stop using the lame Apple camera app, use this one instead.
CardStar - Scan all your loyalty cards here, never carry them on a keyring again.
Good Reader - It's primary purpose is to store PDF's internally using iPhone storage; it's clandestine purpose is for you to store all your video pron under lock and key without anyone knowing it. Great built-in video player, easy to download and store xhamster and youpron streams. Travel buddy. Makes you want an iPad.
Reeder - The best RSS app, push news specific to you, not generic articles.
Google Local - Type a single word like "restaurant" to find anything near you.
FiOS Remote - Or equivalent, control your DVR, set recordings, anywhere.
Dropbox - Free app that lets you get files from your desktop to your iPhone.
Red Laser - Scan any barcode in any store, find out if you're getting the best price. Bed Bath Beyond price matches; saves much money.
CamScanner - Use the camera to take a photo of a document instead of a scanner. Edit, correct horizontal/vertical planes. White balance, send to camera roll, email, fax, etc. Critical app if you're at home and not at the office.
OpenTable - Dining reservations without calling anyone, good reviews too.
iTorch - Use the camera flash as a flashlight, this one is free and simple.
Flixter - Essential movie times app. Buy tickets, reviews, trailers, etc.
Convert Units - Inches to centimeters, liters into gallons, you get the idea.
iMovie - Your iPhone is a 1080p video camera. This lets you turn clips into a continuous movie. Graphics, background music, editing, amazing. Get an Apple TV, you can record 10 minutes of clips at the ballet recital, convert it into an iMovie project while you're bored and still at the show, stream it wirelessly to your HDTV the moment you get home. Never fails to impress.
Clear - Very simple and easy to-do list.
BMW Parking Assistant - If you use parking meters, you want this free app. You put coins in the meter, you hit a button, it counts down the remaining time and remembers where you parked in case you forgot. If you tell it you're shopping or dining it calculates the time needed to get the check and walk back where you left the car.
iCab Mobile - An alternate browser to Safari with tons of features including spoofing device ID's, forces websites to think you're using a PC instead of mobile.
Siri - The most underused app on the iPhone, use your voice for everything, it really works. Especially in your car. "What's the score of the Jets game?"

I have a similar one called shopsavy. Amazing .It has saved me probably close to $500 from stores like Best Buy and Toys R Us
