He played well in those 2 games......Tackled well and just happened to not get exposed, congrats 2 whole games

Since then, he has been a nightmare on defense whenever he is out there

    Answer me this:

On a passing down and distance, in what position would Eric Smith actually succeed in? Obviously not man to man against a WR, TE, or even a RB out of the backfield where he has been sliced up repeatedly......He is not athletic or quick enough to be an effective blitzer off the edge in a DB blitz..........He can't play deep help like a safety should because he's too slow, short, and generally bad ball skills......

It only leaves short zone like a middle linebacker would where Eric Smith would be OK at best.......And I ask you, why not just play an actual linebacker there that is most definitely faster and better in coverage???

    He's worthless.

I think Pace gets signed first. He was grossly overpaid the last few years, but he's still a solid player.

I think Jason Smith gets signed next. He's a relatively young lineman that was drafted 2nd overall. Someone is going to sign him to at least kick the tires. Westhoff loved Eric Smith as a special teams guy. He's got a lot of clout among other ST coaches and will vouch for him to whoever inquires.

If Scott doesn't sign back with the Jets, he may be waiting for a while. Teams aren't looking for 2 down LBs anymore. Especially when 2 down LBs aren't even 2 down players anymore. They're more like "1st down and obvious running situations" LBs.

He is definitely limited physically but he has a good understanding of the game and plays hard. There is a reason why both Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan thought highly of him. The problem is he is not good enough to start. The reason you think "he is awful" is because he was put in situations where his flaws would be exposed. Another thing about Smith is he played hurt for much of the last 2 years. If you look at his stats between 2006-2010, he was pretty good. Thats because he was used as a back up.
Yeah, like when they asked him to play Safety.

You probably dont care much about this, but when you call E.Smith a "decent" football player, you really do hurt your own credibility around here.
just mentioning this...dont get upset at hearing this.

The truth is that in passing situations, this clown Smith is actually a liability for us on the field.
Once opposing QB's see him out there on 3rd & long, they dont even bother calling a play in the huddle. Its a pre-determined audible that all receivers clear out and move away from who-ever Smith is covering, & thats where the ball is going...

He's slow and cant cover for $hit. Thats not the characteristics you want to see in one of our defensive players...he is NOT "decent" at what he does...thats why he got cut. He blows...

Smith is just younger then the others. No one is jumping on Scott or Pace until at least after the draft even then it will be just to work out in camp if it happens. Someone may actually sign Smith just thinking well he is in his prime. Last year he could have been an upgrade for a team like Philly.

Scott or Pace will end up somewhere fetching just above the league minimum. Probably Buffalo.

Prime of what? Eric Smith is a horrible football player that has made every Tight End and Fullback he's ever faced look like Gale Sayers. Buffalo loves our overrated garbage like Brad Smith so maybe he has a shot there. KC has a new regime so they might be avoiding our old crap.

    So true.....

I love the Eric Smith supporters(?).....God forbid a safety is expected to actually play the safety position

A good backup does not = A total liability/disaster that tries hard, I'm sorry

Smith would make a ton of sense in Buffalo.

They had to release their starting SS, George Wilson, due to salary cap issues, and Smith could come fairly cheap, not to mention the fact that he's a better fit at SS than he is a FS, and the Bills have one of the better FS's in the game in Jarius Byrd. So, either Smith could be the third safety in Buffalo, as he did quietly well here here last year, or he could fill at SS.

As a safety, sure. As a dime LB, he was fine and effective. He was cut because he was making $3m this year, which is WAY too much for a guy who is a backup.

He had a role that he could be competent in. Unfortunately if he played beyond that role, he was exposed. As a safety, he simply was lost in space. Beyond 10 yards from the LOS, he didn't know which way was up.

*Distraction from all the Revis crap. I can't stand all the unsubstantiated chatter about him anymore.
Calvin Pace is easily the best player out of all of them, he definitely should be the first to get signed out of that group...

You are right , I dont care. Not interested in "credibility". This is a Jets message board thats all.

The rest of your post actually supports what I am saying. If used properly, hes a decent player. See what crasherino posted. But hey, Thanks for agreeing with me.

    Correct.

But when asked to be a Nickel/Dime LB/S hybrid he was decent. Was pretty good in run support.

Eric Smith is not the disaster everyone makes him out to be. He just has to be used properly. Im sure a coach like Bellichek will know how to use him.

So the only position this "safety" is decent in is a Nickel/Dime linebacker? And for run support?? Again, why not just use an actual linebacker like Demario Davis for example, who is bigger, faster, more athletic, and better in coverage??

He also is worthless blitzing or covering man to man no matter what spot he lines up in......So the ONLY spot he works in is a short zone

Extremely limited, overall worthless roster spot.

I wouldn't agree with the part re blitzing or covering man to man in certain circumstances. He's a guy that is useful in sub packages and on STs. But, the hope for him was to be an actual starting safety which he was never all that good at.

Plus, he was scheduled to make $3m this year, which is ridiculous. In retrospect, he shouldn't have been allowed on the roster last year at $2m+, but I guess the team wanted some stability at the safety position as they were bringing in 2 new starters. Somewhat understandable.

But, I'm sure that Smith will make it somewhere as a 3rd safety/STer for something slightly above the league minimum - which is about right.

Davis is the starting ILB. Smith is a part time role player. Im not suggesting Smith should be a starter/play full time. You need role players on your team if you wish to be successful.
