Mike Francesa Signs Multi-Year Contract Extension With WFAN

NEW YORK (WFAN) – Sports Radio WFAN (660AM/101.9FM) announced today it has signed a long term agreement with Mike Francesa, keeping the venerable personality as host of PM drive (weekdays, 1:00-6:30PM) on the award-winning station for several years to come. Francesa joined WFAN in 1987, the same year the station launched as the country’s first all-sports station, and boasts more listeners than any other local sports radio host.

As part of the agreement, Francesa will also bring his long running Sunday morning “The NFL Now” show to CBS Sports Radio beginning this fall. The program is broadcast live on WFAN from 9:00AM-12:00Noon, and will be available to more than 250 affiliate radio stations nationwide.

“Mike has earned his place in radio history as a great broadcaster and we’re thrilled to continue our relationship with sports radio’s most celebrated host,” said Dan Mason, President and CEO, CBS RADIO. “WFAN and Mike Francesa are synonymous with the absolute best in sports programming excellence. These two powerful brands have endured the test of time, and remain a very relevant force in the industry nearly three decades after they first went on the air.”

Added Mark Chernoff, Vice President, Sports Programming, CBS RADIO and WFAN Program Director, “Mike represents the heart and soul of WFAN, and we’re proud he will continue to make the station his long-term broadcast home. Like no one else, Mike can take a story to the next level and involve his listeners in thought provoking ways with topical and opinionated conversation. He has set the standard for what represents an entertaining and informative radio program.”

“I’m very proud of what we have accomplished at WFAN,” says Francesa. “I am also honored and thankful to CBS RADIO for its continued commitment, and most of all to the listeners for their enduring loyalty.”

Francesa has anchored afternoons on WFAN for more than 25 years. He has been recognized with two NAB Marconi Radio Awards, and was voted top sports personality by radio industry publications Talkers and Radio Ink. In addition, he was the recipient of the inaugural Cynopsis: Sports Media Award for Best Radio Program in 2012.

WFAN is available across a variety of multi-media platforms including 660 AM, 101.9 FM, www.wfan.com, and via theRadio.com app for iOS and Android devices. In addition, Francesa’s weekday show can also be seen on The YES Network.

He's good at playing to the village idiot. And in this town, there are plenty of those.

He's actually pretty good at talking basketball and sometimes baseball. Football he brings nothing as well as the other sports.

I would have more respect for Francessa if he allowed callers who are making a valid point in opposition to him to actually make the point. Instead he cuts them off so he doesnt look bad. Yet he allows the myopic callers who only call to agree with him to stay on the air.

Bad move in my opinion and not at all b/c of his Jet hatred I just think the guy is starting to become, old, boring and more and more irrelevant as the years go on. If anything they should be looking to bring in a younger co-host I think "his brand" is not resonating with that younger demographic.

He always talks about how he is going to retire but the truth is he is too selfish and egotistical not to have that platform. He needs a place to bloviate. And he does not want to give up his seat no matter what he says. It would kill him to see Joe and Evan move into his spot and see the station continue to thrive without him. His ego won't allow for that.

Mike Francesa owes his newfound popularity to a new generation of callers who find ways to annoy the Sports Pope

Like great plays in a game, or famous comedy sketches, some of the episodes fueled by Francesa and his cult can be described in a few words: 'The Nap,' 'The Weatherman,' 'Al Alburquerque' and 'LIPA Sucks.'

There are at least two people who consider Mike (Sports Pope) Francesa a radio genius. One is Francesa. The other is his boss Mark Chernoff.

We now are gravitating toward their way of thinking. For it takes a genius, or someone with dumb luck, to reinvent himself after nearly three decades behind the WFAN microphone. That’s what the Pope has done. He has found a way to attract that coveted younger demographic.

This ain’t an easy thing to do. It took years. Francesa has no idea of his transformation. He is too oblivious to the fact he has stumbled onto something that has livened up a stale act. In this age when radio hungers for younger listeners, the Pope has found a way to deliver. It has nothing to do with FAN moving to an FM schtick, song parodies or guy talk.

Through all his gaffes, haughty pronouncements, bogus predictions, laughable alibis and delusional excuses, the Pope, with his own brand of ineptitude, has created a culture of attracting younger callers who love getting under his skin. Call it pranking. Call it goofing. Most importantly, call it hysterical and highly entertaining.

It’s taken years, but Francesa has finally found himself a partner, a Chris (Mad Dog) Russo, so to speak — thousands of them.

Like great plays in a game, or famous comedy sketches, some of the episodes fueled by Francesa and his cult can be described in a few words: “The Nap,” “The Weatherman,” “Al Alburquerque” and “LIPA Sucks.” There are plenty more. They have all provided welcome relief from his sleep-inducing, repetitious analysis.

Some of his colleagues have suggested Francesa lighten up, laugh at himself when confronted. No way. These first-timers are like kids at a zoo, trying to poke the big bear with a little stick.

You want the bear agitated, you want to hear him say how long he’s “been doing this” and “how much they pay me.” You want to hear him ask: “Do you really think this kind of nonsense bothers me?”

Of course it does. That’s the beauty of this. He’s got a good thing going, but can’t help regularly displaying his thin skin. It’s spontaneous confrontation. Only a Gasbag as pompous as the Pope could make it work.

Unlike all other shows, Francesa doesn’t need to “tease,” what’s coming up every 30 seconds because listeners will stick around anxious to hear whether the next caller will prey on the Pontiff’s obtuseness.

Or get his latest weather forecast.

    The man deserves a raise.

Gotta love Jets fans who listen to this fat overrated clown bash their team 5 hours per day and then complain about it. I know Michael kay sucks then just get Sirius already or listen to music. I listen to Fatso once in while at work when I'm bored and then I hear him make a dumb comment like that Coples had a "fair" rookie season or that the Jets had no injuries last year besides Revis and I switch the channel.

    Al Alberquerque would disagree.

I simply don't understand why people listen to the guy, thus keeping him on air. Even fellows who can't stand him listen to him. It's borderline non-sexual masochism.
