Thread: Geno will start this September

    Geno will start this September

Do you people honestly believe that Idzik signed Peterman & Colon in free agency, then went on to draft Winters, Aboushi, Campbell, a 246 pound Fullback/Halfback bruiser, known for his blocking to protect a guy that the entire staff has fallen out of favor with?

Sanchez got booed out of Madison Square Garden & that was mostly Giants & Knick fans!
What do you think the reaction will be if we trot him out vs the Bucs for our home opener?
He's as much as a distraction right now as Tebow was. What is there that Sanchez could possibly help Geno with? Moping? Turning the ball over?

Sanchez was bad when he was throwing the ball 17 times. When he thew it 30 times he was abysmal.
This is rinse & repeat from 2009 playbook. Bolster the Oline, bring in a stable of RBs & a kick azz Fullback (Bohanon will be play the role of Tony Richardson)
Get 2 mean & nasty Guards out of the 5/6 guys in camp.
Run a lot of simple screens, traps, basic stuff, with a few deep throws to a streaking Hill & Holmes to keep defenses honest.
Play good hard defense & try to steal games in the 4th quarter.

The difference is this: Geno Smith is a much more accurate QB on short throws & screens than Sanchez, he's actually a better runner if the play breaks down, and he's played a lot more games in college than Sanchez.

Like the book Outliers, you get better with experience, and Geno is coming into the NFL with way more experience than Sanchez.
Protect him with the running game, take your shots downfield and see what happens.
Anyone who thinks Garrard will survive more than 2 games is dreaming in fact he hasn't even played a significant game in 2 years.
The Geno Smith era starts vs the Tampa Bay Bucs, lets hope Mr. Revis is still on the shelf by then, lol.

You make a good case. A lot of times they start the rookie a few games into the season to calm the nerves.

i happen to agree that this is idzik's vision. the goal will be for geno to get rid of the ball quickly on most passes with a few plays with the read option.

Unless Geno has a horrible preseason, I believe he'll be the starter, and if it's not Geno, it will be Garrard. There is no way on God's green earth that Mark Sanchez will ever get another starting snap for the Jets.

Geno will have to earn the right to start, he wont be given the job outright like Sanchez. Personally Id let Mark start the season, if he is even as close as bad as he was past 2 years make the switch and bury Mark as the #3 for rest of the year. It would be hard work for Mark to play as bad as he did last yr, so he should improve some, impossible to be worse.. Then maybe we can trade him during season or in offseason for a 5th rounder maybe.

That may be the plan, although we still need to see what happens with Sanchez.

It was said on ESPN right after the Jets selected Geno Smith that he was told by MM that the starting QB job is his to lose.

Open competition. Best man wins the job and starts week one. I've got my money on Geno, then Garrard, then assfumble.

Distraction for whom - Jet fans. Who cares how the crowd reacts, if he plays well, it will silence them and perhaps turn them into cheers.

Yes, that blueprint right there is the REX G&P system. The one we're supposedly moving away from with MM on staff. There's absolutely no reason to go in that direction again, especially if Geno Smith is your starting QB.

The difference is this: Geno Smith is a much more accurate QB on short throws & screens than Sanchez, he's actually a better runner if the play breaks down, and he's played a lot more games in college than Sanchez.

Yes, Smith does have more college experience, but similar to Sanchez does that experience make him ready day 1 for an NFL QB role. The WVU offfense from everything I've read and seen ia pretty simplistic and worked off of 1st read quick throws and dump offs. Now that actually bodes well for the WCO but there's many other nuances to being a NFL QB that Smith needs to learn for the first time not unlike Sanchez in 2009. The Jets probably rushed Sanchez into the starting lineup in 2009 and never properly developed him because of Rex's G&P system and the immediate success the team had. This years team isn't the 2009 Jets , they'd be foolish to make those same mistakes again with Geno. And for those who care to remember Sanchez' deep ball was one of the better aspects of his game problem is when your offense is super vanilla and there's no playmakers to throw too it negates that aspect of the game.

Anyone who thinks Garrard will survive more than 2 games is dreaming in fact he hasn't even played a significant game in 2 years.

Geno Smith should get his chance, let's no get him killed and ruin his confidence like they did with Sanchez, develop him properly with MM , David Lee and Garrard as his mentors and play him when he's ready. If Sanchez is resurrected by MM & the WCO we have a better situation like the one the 49ers had last year. Throwing another young talented but raw QB to the wolves just isn't prudent at this time.

The highlighted part is the key. This is why he will be better than Sanchez. But not sure it should be day one. But I would like to see Sanchez cut, regardless.

GM doesn't get to decide what player starts. I know the qb is always the bigger decision but should not be different rules for any player. I think the O cord should be able to make the call. Its his offense, his style..

That in itself would be refreshing. We've had the DC making those calls for 4 years.

Geno Smith was picked exactly 10 spots earlier that Kellen Clemens. That should tell you how absolute the NFLs confidence in him is...

Right, because if the QB was someone other than a guy drafted this year the Jets would have no interest in having a decent O line.

And check Peterman's numbers. There was a reason Detroit had no interest in keeping him.

Sanchez lost his confidence not because they played him right away but because they kept playing him and he actually got worse. If it were up to me, we'd waive Sanchez now and start with Garrard if he plays okay in training camp. If he is bad or gets injured again, let Smith play.

Sanchez is never taking another reg season snap for this franchise. The only reason they are holding onto him is in case a qb gets hurt in the preseason and they can get a pick from a desperate team.
