    so sorry, Timmy.

17 years is a lot, that's a strong bond so I can only imagine how tough this is for you.

like others have said, remember the great times you shared and take solace in the fact that you gave him a long, happy life in a loving environment.

Sorry about Pete, Timmy. My dog is just about 6 years old. A black lab mix. She's still young, but I've had so many family and friends lose their dogs recently, I've started to think about it more and more. I didn't want her when we first got her, but I had to take her to the vet one day for a routine visit, and we ended up having a big health scare with her. It turned out to be a false alarm, but ever since then she's been my dog. Goes everywhere with me, follows me all around, sits/sleeps at my feet. Jesus, I get emotional just thinking about the day she goes (no homo).

    RIP Pete.

Slept in the yard on a perfect spring day today with sunshine, a nice breeze and birds chirping. I pet him and talked to him all day. It was a beautiful, terrible day.

I was hoping he'd pass here, but he didn't and we took him to the vet where he passed without a peep. I realize we were blessed to have him for seventeen years, but I'm really going to miss him. He was my main man.
So sorry for your loss. 17 years is a long full life, and it sounds like you gave him a good life and a good home.

For the last two weeks, i have seen this thread. I never opened it but every time I saw it it got me really upset. The first time I saw it I got emotional and had to sneak off to the restroom before my students noticed

why? because my beautiful little girl pepper, a cute min pin I had for 12 years since a pup, was on her way out as well.

On monday, she made it easy on me when I came home from work and she was laying there dead. No need to "go to the vet" for the last time....which I knew I had to do fairly soon. Her little heart had enough and gave out

these lil fuXXers....they make you sad. Its worse than people dying

That's because they live for the moment, do not hold grudges and are always happy to see you.

People, on the other hand just suck.

As much as you want to spend money to prolong the inevitable, don't do it. Not just because it's a financial hardship to you, but what does she really gain as to quality of life? It's time to let her go. It's the sad reality of pet ownership, we generally outlive them. I feel your pain. It's NEVER easy. Take solace in the time you've given her. Sorry for your ultimate loss.

Edit. By all means, if it's in the very early stages such that spaying is a cure, do it immediately.
Some of the hardest days in my life were at the end of my dogs lives. This guy above is right. If you can do anything to help, do it. If you can't, you have to help her alleviate the suffering and it's really hard. I feel for you, and hope it's not...

    Sorry for your loss....

And I know what you mean. They really are mans best friend. I think I like my Shepherd more than most non-family members. He's definitely a lot smarter than some. It may even go... my wife, flesh and blood relatives, the dog, then the in-laws and everyone else.

Earlier in the year, he and I were going for a walk and got attacked by a dog that was off leash in their yard, no owner around. Long story short, my dog got bit and needed surgery, including being put under. I was ready to murder a mother****er for days afterwards. Thankfully, all worked out fine.

    Godspeed to our little friends.

I have gone through 3 collies over the last decade, with each ending in heartbreak. But we keep going back to that well.

Losing them rips every shred of soul out of you.

    Sorry guys.

This thread is a tough read.

Losing a pet is the absolute worst. We bring them home thinking it is us that take care of them, and somewhere along the way it gets reversed.

    Condolences.

I want to say sorry to all those who have lost a dear pet or are about to.
    It does suck.

Dear old Jethrow is a short timer, back legs don't work right anymore, so we are just babying him along for our own selfish enjoyment, which is OK, it's a pets life.

Still I don't feel sorry for me, or any of you others that have lost a dear pet, I do feel sorry for those that have never experienced the bond one has with a truly great pet, priceless.

I hope to put down a few more Jethrows before my time is done.

It is better to have loved and lost, then never have loved at all.
