Of course, they went and spent the Lord's gift in its entirety and, when found out by the bank, couldn't repay it. That's why the poor soul now has to report in to my brother regularly. I don't know what the actual charge or sentence was, but you would think the bank would at least share some culpability in this.
The banking industry has a very powerful lobby and has been able to pass all kinds of federal laws that protect it from liability for virtually all of its mistakes -- even for simple things like putting money in the wrong account. A friend in college found 99k had been depsoited in her account and asked me what to do. I advised her to leave it alone and sure enough the bank contacted her a few days later. A lawyer told her she did the right thing as they have a right to recovery even though it was their screw-up.

Don't follow this advice if you would like to stay a free man.

I would say discovery by the bank is almost 99 percent within 6 months.

    After 6 months 50 percent ..

    After one year...below 50 percent.

For me personally, I would alert the bank.

Life has 2 kinds of problems.

    1.Problems money can fix
    2. problems money can't fix.

Number 2 is serious, money is over rated.

Word. Maybe they give me a reward. Or knock down the rates on a couple cards.

Possession IS 9/10s of the law. And if you're in possession of the money, you're going to jail. Period.
It'll cost a lawyer, a fine, lost work time and a little time perhaps with Bubba.
Plus repayment with interest. You are not going to duel a bank.

Hom? Art Hom? He is crafty. That whole "thick face; black heart" thing.

It might be. But we'll only know for sure when Jets Things goes to make a withdrawal.

So what do you think happened here?

I'm guessing some minimum wage clerk key punched the 6,800 into his account by transposing 1 number in the account, therefore someone else's account is light by that same 6,800, just a matter of time before they complain, I think they find it. He can play stupid and not take it all out at once and do it in dribs and drabs, but I think at some point they tell them they want their money back.

Absolutely thats how it happened, IMO. However, when the customer complains, unless the transaction is very recent and handled by the same branch, they simply credit his account $6,800 from a "slush fund" all banks maintain. The transaction then goes to internal accounting to research. They have thousands of transactions to research. Some never get solved.

How come this **** never happens to me? There's at least three stories in this thread of money appearing in peoples bank accounts. I'm a good guy - I pay my taxes, eat red meat, don't use tapatalk, don't own a gun but I'm thinkin about getting an RPG cuz it's my right to bear arms, don't smoke, drink excessively, and hold open doors for little old ladies.

If anything, I get the opposite. Suddenly, my bank account is short $6,800.

Wait 6 mos then go drop it on 32 Black.
If they try to take the interest back too (or his winnings on the $6,800 parlay from teh Derby), that's where I draw the line and call meself a lawyer.
