His biggest issue is that he never looks at the ball. He looks at how the players react.
I don't think he can even see the players out there anymore, he can't even accurately describe what actions they are taking as balls sail out there. To me he's a self-absorbed old man who believes his schtick is equal to the game. Problem is, its unacceptable to jerk around the home listeners with faux calls he later has to retract after Waldman stage-whispers what actually just happened to him, then he mumbles some asinine excuse. He's pathetic and embarrassing to his profession. At least he isn't a lisping Mary-boy like the Mets new guy, Josh Lewin. He's a hard listen as well.
