Black Hawk Down
As you might imagine, I'm partial to WWII films myself, but too young to have seen many of the "classics" of the genre.
My own list:
1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Braveheart (despite it's gross inaccuracy in places and cheesy lovestory extra).
3. Katyn
4. Defiance
5. Valkyrie
6. The Gathering Storm/Into the Storm
7. War Horse (if you excise the "Irish/British Poverty Drama" that bookends the film).
8. Enemy at the Gates
9. The Last Samurai
And special note for "Band of Brothers" on HBO, which was a miniseries not a film, but was utterly brilliant.
So, suggest some great films, list your own favorites. I know I've missed many a good film, so I hope to get some great suggestions to check out on demand.
Black Hawk Down
I gotta go old school, in no particular order:
The Dirty Dozen
The Great Escape
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Guns of Navarone
Too many to list. A few off the top.
Outlaw Josey Wales, all time favorite movie.
The great escape, historically accurate for the most part.
Bridge Over he River Kwai.
Midway, historically accurate for he most part.
Rambo series, hey they were fun.
Gladiator (Opening Scene)
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
Hamburger Hill
The Deer Hunter
Saving Private Ryan
+1 on Blackhawk Down
Full Metal Jacket
Memphis Belle
Dr Strangelove
If, as you say, you're a fan of WW2 films, you owe it too yourself to see the classics already listed. The following two posts, with a minor change , makes up my Top 10 list. Substitute Patton for Hamburger Hill, and add Paths of Glory, maybe the best war movie ever made, and you have one hell of a list.
The Deer Hunter
MASH
Paths of Glory
Lawrence of Arabia
Apocalypse Now
Hot Shots! Part Deux
The Best Years of Our Lives (a post war movie)
No one said Patton yet? That movie and George CScott were brilliant... a must own.
