    Not a lawyer. Too logical.

That leaves Indian Chief. (What his position on the "Redskins" moniker?)

Very strongly against it's continued use, matter of fact.

I personally find it inappropriate and offensive.

Okay, so what tribe do you represent?

    (I'm guessing Commanche.)

Aye. The Tweedie Clan, no doubt, whose crest is a bull's head.

Really? Washington Redskins is equivalent to the Grambling N****** or the Stanford Yellow Menace. There are plenty of alternatives that would at least be reasonably respectful and maintain the logo.

Since when is "The Fighting Irish" derrogatory? "The Drunken Irish" maybe. Or "The Irish Potato Eaters" or .... oh, wait, was that too close to home?

Perhaps you misunderstand my position. I have less of a problem with teams calling themselves Indians, Jews, Scotsmen, Irish, Belgians, Aussies or whatever. It's not terribly classy, but it's not intrinsically hostile or bigoted. It just opens the door for trouble, the first being the logo associated with the name, the second being how fans and others engage the team name, which can quickly descend to bigotry or the like. I wouldn't do it personally, but I'd want to see how it's handled.

It's an immediate deep-six when a team is named directly as a derrogatory reference. Redskins, Slant-eyes, Hook-noses, etc. You can't gussy something like that up as respectable. It's already hopeless.

Re the Fighting Irish, the irony is that most people object to the mean little leprechaun, not the term.

I (50% Irish by Genetics) am not in any way offended by Notre Dame.

IMO The "Redskins" is a direct equivalent to the "Ni@@ers".

It's in that rare class of simply unacceptable terms.

With that said, seeing Paula Deen be crucified for having said the N-word years ago is a disgusting example of the double standard we not exist under, and how selective racial outrage has created a public "seperate and unequal" set of rules of behavior.

I'm of Italian decent and I would LOVE if they named the Battling Dago's. Most of the Indains never gave this a thought until WHITE LIBERAL sports casters and writers made it an issue. MOST still don't

This is both stupid and ridiculous. This has been protested by numerous Native American groups. They don't own the Redskins yet. My hope is that they simply buy the team on their casino profits and send Snyder and his bigoted ass packing. I don't recall blacks protesting Step and Fetchit either. Perhaps there was a time when such groups had no voice. They do now, thank god. What this nation has done to native Americans is a complete and utter disgrace on every level. This is just small icing on the cake of our other national sin.

Nice try LIBERAL, this from the uber conservative NBC sports. As I said WHITE LIBERALS have noyhing better to do but look undr rocks so they can YELL RAAAAAAAACISMMMMMM!!!!!

WASHINGTON - A poll of American Indians found that an overwhelming majority of them are not bothered by the name of the Washington Redskins
Only 9 percent of those polled said the name of the NFL team is “offensive,” while 90 percent said it’s acceptable, according to the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey,

I could give a f*** about your survey. It's racism plain and simple. But you're just a hater, so I don't know why I bother to reply. Nice try dispensing your bigotry by the usual tactic of calling somebody a liberal for having some basic common sense.

I'm well aware of the origin of the term and how it evolved. Look it up.

I'll bet you wolud wet yourself if you saw the name GRINGOS on a Restaurant here in Houston. ,that wouldn't bother you because it's a slur against white people. Call these tribe up and tell them, You NEED to be OFFENDED, DAMN IT!!!!
he Richmond Times-Dispatch reached out to the chiefs of some of Virginia’s Indian tribes to gather some thoughts about the Redskins name and find out whether those tribes are offended by the name controversy that launched a thousand blog posts.

Robert Green, retired chief of the Patawomeck Tribe in Virginia, told the paper that he has no objection to the team’s name.

“It doesn’t bother me,” Green said. “About 98 percent of my tribe is Redskins fans, and it doesn’t offend them, either.”

Kevin Brown, chief of the Pamunkey Tribe of Virginia, said that his tribe generally feels the same way.

“I’m a Redskins fan, and I don’t think there’s any intention for (the nickname) to be derogatory. The majority of the people in my tribe don’t have a problem with it. There are a few who do, and we respect their feelings.”

Perhaps the most adamant on the issue was G. Anne Richardson, chief of Virginia’s Rappahannock Tribe, who may be more offended by the controversy than by the name itself.

“I don’t have an issue with it,” she said. “There are so many more issues that are important for the tribe than to waste time on what a team is called. We’re worried about real things, and I don’t consider that a real thing.

“We’re more worried about our kids being educated, our people housed, elder care and the survival of our culture. We’ve been in that survival mode for 400 years. We’re not worried about how some ball team is named.”

I'm hoping an Indian group buys that team and re-names it the Yids so Daniel Snyder can finally get the drift, but we all know this is really about preserving a money-making name, even if the patent office continues to reject it as offensive. Of course, local residents who root for the Yids will have no problem. It refers to 'Yiddish." We have no problem with that. Or maybe the Jew-boys. After all, Jew is not pejorative, and the teams are made up of males... who would have a problem with that?

I'm sure next you'll search Google for African Americans who have no problem with the "N" word.

And no I don't find "Gringo's" acceptable either. But "Round Eyes" might pass...
