Best Foreign Country to Go For a Spur-of-the-Moment Long Weekend?

    Topic says it all.

If you decide to just go for a trip, 4 days, and want to jet off somewhere (preferably Europe), where and what are the best places to go"?

If you have a 4 days, you could France. You'd probably not have the chance to get away from Paris, but 3-4 days in and around Paris is enough that you'd get a good feel for the city but not too long that you'd be bored.

Or, being that you are history buff, you can skip Paris completely and head out Normandy for a long weekend. You can do some tours of the WWII battlefields and drink copious amounts of wine.

I wouldn't try to get more than one place in in that short a time. Whatever you do, one city/region.

You can take a night flight (say on Wed night), land Thursday morning and then have Thurs/Fri/Sat free and fly back Sunday afternoon.

Spain - either Barcelona or Madrid - is also a good option.

To be honest, after careful planning 4 days in Edinburgh was perfect. Great walking city, saw all the sites in 2 days, went on excursions the other 2 days, and visited great pubs during the 4 nights.

I don't think your sig would be advertiser approved. But it is Big L approved.

Take this for what it's worth - A coworker asked me when's the best time to go to Ireland, in the spring or the fall, not summer. He will be doing a motorcycle tour. I said June. Then I said "You know they drive on the wrong side of the road over there" and he says "Yeah, no problem. I rented a scooter while I was in Bermuda last weekend".

So perhaps Ireland or Bermuda. I dunno.

400 Days wouldn't be enough for me in Edinburgh. I cntinue to wish their job market was better over there (or my qualifications better, either way).

Paris is great, but it's filled with French people.

Normandie D Day beaches is an excellent idea which I'm sure WF would appreciate.

I know some of you guys are thinking of this place for certain amenities

but the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam just re-opened after a 10-year renovation. They came up with an amazing way to promote the museum re-opening by using Rembrandt's The Night Watch.

I'm going to recommend Switzerland. Shouldn't be too crazy since it's off peak for skiing/winter stuff, while it's peak season for touristy/nice weather stuff.

Rome or Florence would be my choice, but honestly, anywhere in Europe is far to get to for only four days. You'll blow a day just to get there and it takes a day to recover completely from the flight. London is okay for a short visit, but I still like to have 7-14 days every time I travel to EUCs.

Ever been to Montreal or Quebec City? Only an hour flight from NY, yet a world away and you will definitely know you are in a different country. Either is beautiful, cultural, and diverse, and very French (Great food, women, architecture, and wine).
