ATF Sting Operations - Good or Bad Enforcement Methods?

Found this of interest. It poses a lot of questions about the role of law enforcement in a democratic society. There are clearly very dangerous and violent elements of the drug trade. But one wonders if this is simply a reflection of the inability to prosecute successfully using normal enforcement and judicial processes. What's reasonable and what's overreach?

As far as this goes the ATF is doing a good job. Trapping drug peddling scum = good. Arming drug cartels = bad.

BTW, who is running the ATF these days?
