Former teammate: Sanchez “dumb while being dumb”

The Jets haven’t said much about the Mark Sanchez bare-butt video that made the rounds this week — largely because there might not be that much to say about it.

But one of his old teammates is taking credit for keeping more such videos off the internet, and said Sanchez is mostly “stupid” when it comes to his public image.

In an interview with Kristian Dyer of Metro.us, former Jets quarterback Erik Ainge said he protected Sanchez from a similar incident in 2009, when he smashed a cell phone which someone was using to videotape a streaking Sanchez.

“There were numerous times when things would happen, when things would go down, articles of clothing would be removed,” Ainge said. “Mark is goofy. He played truth or dare. He was kind of awkward around girls, so he needed other people around him to help him out. I was good at that — there were other guys who were good with that. So we’d help him out and talk him through his awkwardness.”

Ainge, now a radio talk show host in Tennessee, described Sanchez as naive.

“He’s been a target in college and now he’s a target in the NFL,” Ainge said. “Now it’s become a thing to try and catch Mark doing something stupid. He’s never breaking the law. Look at Aaron Hernandez, Mark Sanchez is child’s play in the NFL, as far as off-the-field stuff. I’d know as good as anybody — what Mark does off the field is child’s play. He’s dumb about it. He’s stupid while being stupid. You have to be smart while being stupid, and he’s dumb while being dumb. Look at the butt video. He needs someone he trusts there when Mark wants to go streaking through his own condo.”

Frankly, Ainge doesn’t sound like the kind of wingman you’d want — primarily because he’s talking way too much, and generally overstating his own role in this thing. He’s also dealt with his own issues in his short NFL career.

And in the grand scheme of things, Sanchez isn’t really doing anything to harm anyone. There’s some wine, there’s some women, there’s a few bars of “Pants on the Ground.”

Until someone comes up with something that’s illegal or dangerous, it’s hard to muster up the appropriate indignation for this one.

That's one area I don't think the Sanchize needs help in.

I wouldn't be too sure. Chicks will throw themselves at him (or anyone else meeting the following criteria) because he is the starting qb on an NFL team. It's easier to get laid when you're a pro athlete millionaire particularly in NY, it doesn't mean you are a ladies man. Though he may be I don't know.

I didn't see the video. Are the women naked before him if at all? If not, it tells me Ainge may have a point.

This really is a none issue. Yes its something we would rather didnt come out to the public but really there is nothing wrong with what he is doing. If he was considered a good player and wasnt in NY I doubt we even hear about this.

This isnt even on the level of what Gronk has done in the past. He was having fun in the privacy of his own home with some friends doing nothing even remotely illegal. He has the right to do what he wants. He isnt harming anyone.

If this happen during the season then maybe we would have something to talk about.

And now Eric Ainge is a reliable source?
Didn't he leave the Jets because he couldn't stop using drugs?

Not being able to stop doing drugs may make him a junkie, but not necessarily a liar. Though quite often they go hand in hand.

There has always been something off with Sanchez, his eating a hot dog in the raiders game; his sensitivity to criticism, reading from a prepared script at a post-game press conference; the list is quite long......time to go the Geno Way! No ifs, ands, or BUTTFumbles!

We drafted that drug head drunk a spot ahead of Carl Nicks. Who gives a crap about Ainge at all. We all know Sanchez is a bit of a dip already, so nice of this beacon of character to be looking out for him.

Sanchez's immaturity problems were well documented in Hard Knocks, and it doesn't appear he's grown up very much since that point. He has the right to live his life to his choosing, but these are usually not the types of people who can dig themselves out of a hole before it's too late.

Granted its his off time before camp and he wasn't doing anything illegal.
But it does indicate how bad his judgment is and its not surprising he
brings it to the football field which results into turnovers

Crystal clear his biggest issue is maturity, successful QB's just don't get caught out being a total prick as often as Sanchez does.

His immaturity translates onto the field.

Always felt Sanchez is stupid. Still making the same mistakes over
and over again Rich Gannon said he instructed Mark not to hold the
football like a briefcase when he was a rookie and Mark is still holding
the ball the same way. Just one example, his stupidity definitely has
    affected his performance
