    Pacific Rim

Not a huge fan of "blockbuster" movies but will go to the cinema to see a Del Toro movie. Think it will be mindlessly kick arse on an epic scale.

Plot (I imagine it will be wafer thin) revolves around giant monsters fighting giant robots, a C movie made by a AAA director and with AAA effects.

    Should be awesome.

Saw this tonight and have to say my impressions aren't good. Obviously I wasn't expecting much of a plot but the dialogue was pretty bad, the accents awful - on the plus side the CGI and action set pieces were top notch. Some visionary scenes but I did expect more from a Del Toro movie.

    Recommendation: catch it on blu-ray.

    Looks sweet

    Kinda like Godzilla vs Transformers

Yeah, I don't expect it to have some kind of great story to tell...but who cares? This is the kind of movie where you just turn your brain off and have fun.

If you're after that I recommend, but there's just some cringeworthy filler in-between those awe-tastic smack down scenes. It is basically Godzilla vs Transformers with much better CGI and a visionary director, and an 8 year old writing the script. One moment you're laughing because of the dialogue, the next your jaw is open because of the action.

Holy shart - worst movie I've seen in a long time. Stay far, far away.

The last movie I walked out of was in 1990 (Problem Child) with John Ritter. I lasted almost 80 minutes in on this one . . .

I'm fine with big-budget blockbusters but this one is miserable. It's a messy pantomime of what an "american big budget action thriller' should be. It's full of people you won't recognize saying lines that you won't care about or even understand.

If you happen to recall all the sparks that didn't fly in the super-awkward 'romance' between Sofia Coppala and Andy Garcia in Godfather 3 - then you'll have a sense of how stilted the main 'love story' is here. The Japanese lead is perhaps the least-sexy female lead since Sarah Jessica Parker.

The plot isn't. There's some backstory for sure, the setup - but then that's it.

Charlie Day is okay in it. But OMFG was the rest of it awful. Save yourself two hours of your life that you'll sorely want back afterwards.

Oh and the score - that grating, miserable score - it's like a sleep-function on an alarm clock that you can never turn off. You keep hoping it will stop, but it never does . . .

    Your kid will love it.

I took my soon-to-be 8 yr old and he loved it and I liked it. It is Godzilla vs. Mecha and that's what it's suppose to be.

Dialogue? I honestly didn't care about the dialogue. This isn't a Tarantino movie. This is about giant robots fighting giant monsters. It's an ode to the monster movies of our childhood. Del Toro said as much in interviews. I think that's why it's gotten such good reviews by mainstream critics. They understood that its not meant to be high brow cinema.
