Anybody own any hens?? Need advice.

    HEy peeps.

Was thinking of building a small hen house for 2-3 egg layers. Some of them are pretty, and the kids like breakfast jacks(no ham).

Anybody here offer any wisdom on this subject? Something tells me there is more to it, but im too lazy to read a book.

Would i have to do anything crazy like trim their nails, or lodge some pills up their rear side like ive seen done on tv with cows?

Im sure some of you must have something going. If anybody can offer any info, id be much obliged.

Please dont move me to the farm forum.

    Chickens are great.

    I have 3. Get about 12 - 15 eggs a week. Kids get a kick out them.

My brother in law out east in Suffolk had some....heard tales of him having to stick his hand up there arse and some such...having to throw them up in the air and crap...then they all disappeared into a pile of scattered feathers one day and he was left to wander the neighborhood muttering recriminations at neighbors that may have seen a hawk and didnt give him a heads up. Dont know if the whole thing was worth it to him after they all got ate by an varmint..I know he enjoyed it before that fateful day.

His daughters were upset. I guess its like having a dog that you grow attached to, but it can be taken by any passing bird with 3 karate lessons; Real short shelf life sort of thing.

Ok for the kids sake, you get a hen house, you get a bunch of life like hens, make them look as real as possible, make nests out of hay, somehow make it so they are always moving a bit in their nests, hook up some electric motor on wires in the back where no one can see, get a recording of hens and play it on a loop in the hen house, hide a fridge in the corner behind the hens where the kids can't get to it or see it, keep it filled with eggs from the grocery store and each night or morning go place one or two under each fake hen for the kids to grab.

Does not get any better, no clean up, no crap, and no sickness, just happy kids with a constant flow of eggs. It's genius.

Thanks PK. This is exactly like im hoping for. We have some farm eggs out here from the neighbor, and they seem much more flavorful than store bought. Not sure how thats possible. Even the yolks seem more orange than yellow.

Anything really bad you must do to maintain them? Im cool with the chix poop, and stuff, but I do have boundaries. Mostly anal medicating. Do their nails need trimming regularly?

    Hypothetically speaking....

If you had to Hernandez them yourself, and do all the plucking, etc, would you be able to? For a mean Parmigiana?

Lol, mine are older, I'm hoping SD's are to young to know, unless of course SD really wants to go through with this thing, and if so I give 6 months before we see a post that reads "Please recommend a good way to humanly kill hens for consumption".

    All kidding aside, good luck.

While i find no problem with eating them, i wont, unless needed. If things dont work out, i figure i would free them down by the creek in early spring so they can have the summer to find a homestead for themselves.
