I think DD is right. You can consider it a joke or an aside when it's 5 seconds of a 60-second clip, in which the other 55 seconds are praise of Smith's play. If Baldinger really thought that was an issue or concern, he would have spent more time on it.
Even the story in print on NFL.com leads with the "embarrassing" headline of Geno's sprints, but the story itself is one paragraph about his conditioning, and 6 paragraphs about how he's looked good in camp so far.
This is nothing either way. If this is anything more than a "fly buzzing in your ear" to Smith, then he won't survive two years in NY. Yeah, the media sucks, but "character assassination" is a little strong for this story. If you can even call it a story.
